Elin Nordegren gave birth to Sam Alexis Woods the morning after Tiger Woods came in second at the U.S. Open. Coincidentally, Phil Mickelson also had his first child the day after coming in second at a U.S. Open.
Tiger Woods is a daddy. Less than 24 hours after Woods finished second at the U.S. Open on Father's Day, his wife gave birth to a daughter. Woods announced on his Web site Official Website for Tiger Woods that Sam Alexis Woods was born early Monday morning.
"Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully," Woods wrote. "We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy."
Woods said he would miss a major if it meant seeing the birth of his child. Now he won't have to, but it's not clear how his upcoming schedule with be effected.
she might take the lpga by storm but she could also follow in moms footsteps and become a model or a nanny. so the up and coming future lpga girls don't have to worry just yet.
I thought it was just crazy how the exact same scenario happened with Phil Mickelson 8 years ago. I know he had a pager and Tiger probably didn't, but the parallels are amazing:
- U.S. Open
- Chance to tie with a birdie putt on 18
- First child
- Morning after the tournament, when the playoff would have been
If both players make their putts, both players probably leave the course to be with their wives. It's probably best that they both missed.
Plus, what a great putt by Payne Stewart. I'm off to try to find the video now...

Elin and I are delighted to announce the birth of our daughter, Sam Alexis Woods. Sam was born early Monday morning, June 18th. Both Elin and Sam are doing well and resting peacefully. We want to thank our doctors and the hospital staff for all their dedicated and hard work. This is truly a special time in our lives and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks. We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy.
Sam sure is a smart baby. She timed her birth just right so that dad could forget about the previous day and to give him a better chance at making the AT&T National and the British Open.
Since Sam was born early Monday morning, do you think the USGA would have delayed the start of the playoff to give Tiger a chance to come back if he wanted? That would have been an interesting quandry....

I don't think it would be right to delay the start of the playoff. Even if they delayed the playoff, I would guess it would still be difficult for Tiger to concentrate.

I agree. Just wondering since it was Tiger. Of course, since he ed up his birdie chance at 17, we'll never know!
