Anthony Kim has lots of game but there are no rivals for Tiger. Week in and out we look but there is nobody on the planet that is going to challenge him. I know whats coming he didnt win the Us Open, but that means nothing. Im talking about a season on Tour not one tournament. There are some very talented young players Pablo Martin being another on the list, but its just not possible and this comes from a Phil fan. I would like nothing more than someone to step up, and players do then they go away and ride the top 30 wave. I dont even root for Woods I just know how good he really is and theres no escaping it. He was out of sorts Sunday at the Open but how often does that happen, not very. I think the last great rival that could have been was a young Sergio and that didnt work out so well..
I don't root for Tiger, because I feel it is almost a given that he will beat the rest of the players. He played somewhat poorly on Sunday and really did not hit the ball well, but showed his great short game skills, by even having a chance to win it. When he is on, the rest can play for 2nd.
I find it odd that so many people root for him. It's like rooting for Oklahoma when playing Baylor in the 1970's in college football. I would rather see the upset than the favorite win each time. Maybe, I am the crazy one, but I think the upset is more fun to watch.
I do believe that someone else will rise and present a challenge to Tiger in the future, it just is not the current bunch. Phil is awesome in the short game, but does not have the mind of Tiger and attention to details that Tiger has. Tiger has great physical and mental skills and his competitive spirit is unrivaled today. That combination is quite unique.
As for Kim, he is definitely an up an coming player and I hope the US team gets more players like him for future ryder cups. He is a breath of fresh air for american golf. So is Sean O'Hair.
Who??? Not to be a smart, but I don't know who he is. Noone out there is a "rival" to Tiger right now. I wish there was someone, but there's nobody to really challenge him.
I'm assuming that this thread is "Anthony Kim, the NEXT rival for tiger".
I think Kim is a great player. He is not currently Tiger's rival, but I think it possible that one day he is. He's had a great rookie season. Very good round on Sunday at the US Open. Seems very confident.
At Colonial he had 6 birdies in a row. A media member asked him, “have you ever had six birdies in a row’. He said, “Yes, I’ve had eleven birdies in a row”. Then, to qualify for the US Open, he was in a 10 person playoff, which he won. After the round they asked him, “have you ever been in a ten person playoff”. He said, “yeah, one time I was in a 15 person playoff…..and I won that one too.”
I agree with all the replies so far on the topic. There is not a rival as such to tiger at the moment, many could have their day on any one given tournament. But nobody has come along so share the talent 50/50 with him. Ofcourse we need a new talent but it is impossible to find somebody to emulate tiger. He is one and only I think!.
Tiger is this generation's Jack Nicklaus, who over took Arnold, who over took...you get the idea. It's inevitable that someone will come along who will challenge Tiger's supremacy. And that's as it should be. It might not be for another decade, perhaps two, maybe next year. Who knows? All we know for sure is Tiger is right now the best golfer in the world and the best we've seen in a generation.
Before anyone can be considered a rival to TIger, they are going to have to elevate their game above everyone else in the game. When someone starts blowing the rest of the field out week in and week out and plays in final pairings with Tiger on regular occasion, then we can start talking rivalry. Until then, he is just another good player.
The difference between this generation and the ones of the past is the depth of talent. After Tiger, there is a large group of people who can compete with each other week in and week out. Unfortunately, none of them have been able to show they can beat Tiger regularly. It will be interesting to see how Tiger's game changes now that little Sam has joined the family....

Arnold Palmer won 6 of his 7 major championships after his second of two children was born.
Jack Nicklaus won 11 of his 18 major championships after his fourth of five children was born.
Don't see why everyone thinks having a child is going to have Tiger go off the deep end.

I didn't say he would go off the deep end. But, he himself has been talking about changing his practice routine and playing schedule. Not that he plays that much on tour anyway. I think he'll continue to win majors - I just wonder how much we'll see him elsewhere.
Of course, Anthony Kim isn't a rival to Tiger right now. This is why the thread asks if he's the next rival.
I think he's definitely poised to be. He's in his rookie season and he seems immensely talented. He shot 67 at Oakmont in the U.S. Open so he definitely has the ability to go low on one of golfs most difficult set ups.
Whether he becomes a rival to Tiger or even one of the top golfers in the World is still up in the air but he's definitely someone to put on the radar.
Great points everyone. Like you all say right now I just don't think there is anyone to push Tiger. There are alot of great golfers on the tour right now but no one ia close to Tiger.
