I think from here on out, we can keep track of a fictional PGA Tour pro called "Mr. Parshooter." We'll keep track of all of the PGA Tour tournaments and see what par would have finished at. Of course, the cut line also has to be at par or worse.
We'll assume Mr. Parshooter has his Tour card but he's not exempt for tournaments like the Mercedes Championship, Masters, etc. He'll have to qualify for those.
Should be something interesting to keep track of. I will take the lead with this but anyone else can volunteer to post results if they get them before I do. Also, someone can start a Ms. Parshooter on the LPGA Tour if they want.
Jack at or near the lead in a major championship was a great study in psychology. Fairways and greens, grind out 2 putt pars, and watch everyone else melt away. He could go low when he needed to, but more anything, he set the target and dared anyone to come get him.
Interesting that Mr Parshooter falls in at #100 on the money list. I guess we would have to start wondering if he was ranked outside the top 125. This analysis probably tells us two things. One, the majority of PGA Tour courses are set up too easy and two, the standard of play has improved at a greater rate than the minds of our course architects.
This year I am following a Tour rookie who grew up on my hometown country club. Doug Labelle II is a dozen years younger than me, but his dad and uncle are friends with my dad and uncle. All are members at Mount Pleasant Country Club. The only previous touring pro from there was Dan Pohl (Kelly Robbins is also from Mt P, Michigan, but she was a publinx golfer).
He came into this week 105th on the money list, 98th in FedEx Cup points. Pretty much like our Mr. Parshooter, he didn't qualify for the Masters or the US Open (in sectional qualifying, missed by 1 shot that 11 for 1 playoff Mr Kim won).
This week he made the cut on the number. Shot 71 on Saturday, but moved from 63rd to 48th. Sunday he made his first eagle of the week (#5), 3 birdies, 3 bogies, nice closing 68, moved up to T43. Another $21K will get wired to the bank tomorrow, bringing his season total to $512,837, good for 103rd on the money list. Needs probably another $150-180K to retain his card for next year.
18 starts, 11 cuts made, 2 Top 25s, best finish was T4 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. In 72 competitive rounds this year, Labelle is a cumulative +13 for the year. So if you want a real Mr. Parshooter to root for this year...
unfortunatley, most touring pros would hang themselves if they only shot even par every week. Too much machismo and vanity involved to just "bunt" it around and try to shoot par.
But they are better than me, so who am I to judge?
Well, the cut line was -3 this week at the Buick Open which sent our guy packin'. Gotta go low at Warwick Hills...leaders at -10. LaBelle shot +3 but fared better than the likes of Peter Lonard, Brad Faxon, and Players Champ Craig Perks. Best player to miss the cut was Charles Howell III who struggled with +1 73 on Friday to miss by one at -2.
