I'm sure there is a reception area that you go to before the tournament starts. You can probably find everything you need there including your scorecard.

I've seen Tiger yell something when his drive goes offline. I've also seen him point to a side of the fairway. Not sure what the standard practice is, though.

There are a lot of volunteers and officials all over the course. I am sure if you need a rules official, all you need to do is ask for someone. There's probably one always nearby.

I think most of the time, the player will take action into their own hands unless the ruling is a bit complicated.

I have no idea. I think they get those huge 4 feet by 2 feet checks and take them to the bank when it opens on Monday morning.

Tiger yells "FORE LEFT!" when he hits on astray. It's up to the players. Yes they get their scorecards from someone.
I think there is always some official walking the fairways.

1. i think they give it to you when you check in or right before you go on the first tee

2. you are supposed to point left or right (which way the ball is going) and the people that are out there that are supposed to look for their ball warns the crowd

3. you call them over, i'm pretty sure

4. you need a rules official, even if you know were

5. the winner gets a big fancy check and the other guys get small personal checks

Is this correct? It could be different for the PGA Tour but remember when Michelle Wie made her pro debut at the Samsung event a couple of years ago and got DQed? Didn't she say afterward she should have called a rules official instead of doing the drop on her own?

Are those big fancy checks really good checks? I always thought they were just for show.

There's no "checks" any longer. Money get wired directly into players' accounts the following week.

i'm pretty sure it's the same. i think an official needs to know what is taking place and so everyone can be sure that the drop is legal

uh, i always thought they were real...i don't know, maybe they just give them the big checks so they have something to put on a shelf and they just recieve a regular check to get the money

Correct, everyone gets paid electronically (wire transfer)....except Happy Gilmore, who insists on putting the big checks in the trunk of his beater car.

Re: questions about the pro tour

1. There is a starter's tent near the first teebox where the players check-in and receive their scorecards for that round.

2. Some players yell fore. Some just look away in disgust and let their caddie handle it. You'll generally see at least one person point their arms to the left or right.

3. On the PGA Tour, there is at least one person following each group that has 2-way radio. If a rules official does not happen to be following that group, one will be called over the radio and the nearest available will drive his cart over to that hole.

4. A rules official does not have to be notified. But, you do have to inform the other golfer(s) in your group. They can call over an official if they have a question about what you are doing.

5. Funds are direct deposited into players accounts within a couple of days.

Re: questions about the pro tour

There is always a starter's area either in a tent or the clubhouse depending on the venue and it is a requirement to check in officially and get your card the day of each round. Generally, other rules or information is passed to the player on the practice day or Pro-Am day.

It's up to the player. Generally they point or their caddie does, but at tour events there is usually a crowd reaction as well.

There is always a rules official nearby who can be summoned to make a ruling if needed.

It is not required to summon a rules official or check with his competitor although they generally do the latter out of safety and courtesy. The player can make the call himself and often does if it is clear cut. If there is some doubt, he will usually consult with his playing partners. If they are still in doubt, he will summon a rules official. The key here in golf is that it is up to the player to know the rules and make the correct play. If he makes the wrong one, the penalties are significant loss of strokes and/or even disqualification, even if his playing partner agrees with his action. That's why they call rules officials when there is any major confusion. Many times, the player makes the call, goes ahead and plays and does it correctly and there is no problem. However, if his playing partner disagrees or sometimes even people watching on TV do, he can be retroactively penalized later.

These days, for 99% of the players the money is direct deposited in an account they have given the PGA for that purpose. Ocassionally with a newcomer, that account might not have been set up and they give him a check, but that is rare these days.

Yes, it was something like but it's not mentioned in the rules.

Re: questions about the pro tour

every group has a rules official who walks with them, so there always like 10 feet away.

Source?

That is an absurd statement. There are not 52 rules officials present during a major (that's the number of groups in the first two days).

I don't know how many rules officials work Tour events or at a major. It must be less than 18, though, because we often see a delay while a roaming official comes over from another hole. Seems like the final group at a major usually has a rules official with them, but that isn't true for every group, or else we would never see any delays in getting a ruling.

FWIW - Rules Schools are run jointly by the USGA and the PGA of America. They are four days long in which the rule book is covered from cover to cover. After three days of information, the fourth day consists of an examination. To become a USGA official you need to score at least 88 (out of 100), for the PGA Tour it goes up to a 92. To be ratified you must attend and achieve the minimum score once every four years.

Spot on. Rules officials are usually assigned to two or three holes. They can be called by hand-signals or radio. Hand- signals if they are on top of a hill in a good visual vantage point. Otherwise the radio to base which then calls the nearest official .... and hope he hasn't decided to take a much needed break
