2007 British Open (Open Championship) Discussion

I couldn't figure out where to put this and I didn't really think it deserved its own thread so I decided to create a general 2007 British Open thread. Just read something that said a lot of players clubs were lost on the way to Scotland. Luckily, they've been found.

Quote:
Zach Johnson received a call on the fourth hole, while playing with a replacement set of clubs, that the airline found his lost golf clubs.

The Golf Channel reported on Tuesday evening that not only did Johnson get his clubs back, but so did Pat Perez, Justin Leonard, Carl Pettersson, Lucas Glover and a dozen other players whose clubs were missing. The affected players missed out on some practice time, but all entrants in the British Open will be playing with their own set of clubs.

Here's more.

The Golf Channel - PGA, LPGA, Champions, European Tour, Nationwide, Canadian Tour &

Quote:
LOVE OF CLUBS:
Golfers can get downright emotional about their clubs. Just listen to Zach Johnson, who was clearly rattled when his bag didn't accompany him on the flight to Scotland.

The Masters champ was practicing Tuesday with a backup set when he got a call from his trainer on the fourth hole.

"He goes, 'Where are you?"' Johnson recounted. "I'm like, 'Are my clubs here?' He said, 'Where are you?' And I said, 'Are my clubs here?' And he said, 'Yes."'

And what was Johnson's reaction?

"I nearly cried, put it that way," he said. "Not that the clubs I was using were bad, they just weren't mine. I don't like to mess around. I'm very particular about my grips. They don't have my grips here."

Of course, it's easy to understand why Johnson is so attached to these clubs. He used them to pull off his upset win at Augusta National in April.

"I was very concerned," he said. "And now I'm very, very, very, very happy that my clubs are here."

Good night, Sergio is ripping this course apart. 6 under through 17? No number higher than a 4 all day long? Maybe he'll build a lead that even he can't lose.

Good start for Sergio, but I think we know the guy well enough to know that Tiger will move up the leaderboard, and Sergio will choke like he always does. Garcia may have a few major titles if the championship ended after Round 1 or Round 2. I think he'll keep the lead for a bit, and then **** in his pants once the weekend comes.

Very good start for Sergio; just ahead of Ginners. Padraig H not too far bhind either and watch out too for new kid on the block Amateur Rory McIlroy. Good day for the Irish
It's still very early days, but it wwas good to be there and see so many people I know in contention.
Tiger ain't shot out yet and Jim Furyk also shot some good golf.
Plenty left to play for.
Y'all see more on the tv; but I have the atmospherre

I think Godfather's post might well represent the consensus knee-jerk reaction to Sergio leading after day 1. There is justification for it.

But if he is ever going to break through, this is the most likely major he will do it in.

Garcia @ The Open Championship

2002 T8
2003 T10

If Sergio can ever become a consistently good putter I think he could when many tournaments. His ball striking is exceptional.

Re: 2007 British Open (Open Championship) Discussion

So I was listening to the British broadcast today on the internet, and what the heck is "Punter/Punting". At one point of the broadcast there were talking about the current bookie odds on golfers and punting. Sounded like punting was placing a small wager. However later in the broadcast, one anouncer referred to himself as a punter. Context made it sound like it was synonymous with duffer, bud, or bro. Although I couldn't really tell.

I agree...the British will likely be Sergio's first major (whenver that is...if ever that is). However, I think if Tiger's there on Sunday, Sergio won't be. Going back to the 2002 US Open, when Tiger's there on Sunday, Sergio falls off the map. Last year's British is another perfect example. Maybe if he can play ahead of Tiger like Cabrera and Zach did, but Sergio seems like he's intimidated by Tiger more than Baddeley is.

i want to see sergio paired with tiger on sunday in the last group, with sergio leading. then we will see if sergio deserves to win, or if he just can't take the pressure, kindof like aaron baddeley at the us open

Sergio has had problems dealing with the pressure but if you're ever going to win a major, you have to do it sometime. Why not this week?

Also, a lot of players have fallen off the map with Tiger in contention on Sunday but recently, players have been pulling through. E.g. Zach Johnson & Angel Cabrera.

If Sergio does end up winning, I wonder if he'll cry after the 72nd hole. I believe it would mark the second time Sergio would leave Carnoustie crying, although it would be under very different circumstances.

Yeah that's right!

He practiced that "Grr-r-r-r" in that commercial with that football player to practice his mean-look game face.
