Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
I wouldn't want to guess how many players on Tour are using steroids because I have absolutely no idea. I wouldn't mind seeing the PGA Tour implement a testing policy. The LPGA Tour has it and I think the PGA Tour should implement one as well. If they do, I wonder what the penalties should be.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
Just a side bar.
What enhancement drugs are listed on the "do not touch" list the PGA and USGA are considering?
Player mentioned Creatine and HGH.
Are ADHD drugs included? Some students use them off Rx for concentration.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
thats kinda funny considering Gary Player has cheated a number of times in his career, we all know about the caddy tricks he used to have pullin out the wood setting up to the ball patting it down then taking his iron out, Tom Watson even called him out one time on it, he cant really talk can he

I agree that Player does not have a great deal of credibility. Without him identifying who the steroid users are, his comments are unsubstantiated and essentially inflammatory.
The medical signs of steroid use include acne and buking up of muscles. Other than Tiger, I cant think of any one muscular on tour, and i am not suggesting at all that Tiger is using. In fact, he has long favoured drug testing.
As for the acne, there is Tadd, the 16 yr old Hawaii kid who might have some acne.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
PGA definitely needs drug testing. They test for "hot" drivers, why not test for "hot" players. Steroids don't just enhance muscles, they work positively for a players' psyche. They breed confidence and focus. I also think Hunter Mahan looks "half baked" most of the time!! I'm not accusing him of anything, just commenting on his laid back persona and squinty, red eyes. He certainly is a fantastic golfer!
I am 100% for drug testing in golf. Level the playing field now, so the greatest game on earth doesn't end up like baseball.
Don't test those Long Drive contest guys though...some of those dudes would **** hotter than a WWE Superstar!!!! But doesn't that long drive **** kinda' remind you og big time wrasslin'???
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
I don't see how steroids would help in golf. Being swollen, pimply and angry would be counterproductive, wouldn't it? The only one who looks buff enough to be suspicious is Tiger, and I highly doubt he is juicing.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
Steroids won't help anyone putt better.
Beta blockers might.
As for testing, I think it is naive for anyone to say performance enhancing drugs are a non-issue.
That is exactly what Phil and Tiger said this week, making light of it, saying things like "I highly doubt anyone will test positive" and "about the only thing they would find is some guys come to the course hung over."
If there is no testing, how can anyone say either way?
With $440,000,000 in total prize money on the two major men's tours, I'd say at the very least the possibility exists that some guys are looking for an artificial edge over their competition.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
I agree with what some others said. I really don't see how steroids would be that beneficial. That said, I'm sure there are players out there using the stuff just to get any edge.
In yesteryear some players would just go out and get drunk, and have to deal with the hangover the next day on the course.

Yup, there is so much money out there on Tour, it would be very possible for players to look for every edge possible.
Obviously, taking steroids won't make you a better golfer just like taking steroids in baseball won't make you Barry Bonds. But with today's game, it seems like distance is more important than ever.
Re: Gary Player: Steroids have crept way into golf
Taking lean-muscle enhancing steroids will definately make you hit the ball further and have more control out of the heavy rough; first hand experience there.
Tiger Woods was 158 pounds when he joined the tour. Now, he's got to be 225+. Anyone who knows anything about bodybuilding and weight training will tell you that it's almost impossible to gain more than 1 pound of lean muscle in a month of heavy training with maximum protein consumption. For Tiger to have gained over 65 pounds of ultra-lean muscle over the last 10 years is quite an accomplishment, especially considering he has a super-high metabolism as evidence in his youthful slender physique when he joined the tour. I'll leave it at that.

Sorry to nitpick, but Tiger is nowhere near 225. He's not even 200lb. I'd say 190 at the most
EDIT: The PGA Tour Website Profile for Tiger has him at 185lb. Whilst I'd say that this statistic maybe slightly outdated and that he may be 5 or so lbs bigger, he definitely ain't no 225lb
