World number nine Henrik Stenson was today disqualified from the Deutsche Bank Players' Championship after losing count of how many shots he had taken.

Stenson was initially credited with a 12 on the par-five 17th at Gut Kaden, but was disqualified as he was not certain of his exact score and therefore unable to sign his scorecard.

The 31-year-old Swede, who had led the Order of Merit since February until Padraig Harrington's Open victory on Sunday, was already destined to miss the cut after a front nine of 40, although he ironically finished with a birdie three on the last.

"I ran out of putts," the Ryder Cup star told PA Sport.

"I missed a short one and then managed to double-hit it a couple of times in frustration.

"The day was pretty much over even before that. I was three or four over."

Asked if he knew how many shots he had taken, Stenson added: "No, that was the problem. I didn't sign my card because I couldn't figure it out."
Stenson had shot an opening round 70, 5 shots off the lead.

Another story about Stenson from last weekend at the Open Championship:

Bad temper earns fine for Stenson
21/07/2007 - 17:05:19

Henrik Stenson, Europe’s leading player in the world, has been fined £500 (€750) - twice the minimum – for lashing out in anger and taking a lump out of a tee marker during his second round in the Open at Carnoustie.

It was not the Swede’s first offence.

At the 2005 European Masters in Switzerland Stenson, a member of the players’ committee, speared a wedge into a green after a bad chip and had to repair the putting surface.

He is thought to have been fined £1,000 then because of the seriousness of his actions.

One over par at the time on Friday, Stenson triple-bogeyed the short eighth. His first shot went out of bounds left and when he put another ball down and flared that out to the right he swung round and did the damage.

European Tour chief referee John Paramor was there to meet Stenson at the end of the round – just after he had bogeyed the last to fall to five over par. He missed the cut because of it.

“I don’t know how you react when you take a triple, but I get frustrated,” he told reporters. “I didn’t expect it to go OB (out of bounds), I got a bit frustrated and it showed obviously.”

Asked if he knew the amount of the fine Stenson said: “No. They don’t do it on the spot – they don’t do cash payments, I think. I expect I’ll be getting a letter.”

The Open is his first event since becoming a father for the first time at the start of the month.
Tiger Woods was paired with him the first three rounds at The PLAYERS earlier this year. Friday, Stenson pulled his drive on the 18th hole into the lake. Upset, Stenson smashed his driver into the ground. The head broke off into pieces, and one piece flew up and glanced off a cameraman's hand and then his head.

Stenson apologized.

Saturday morning, having witnessed that scene, Woods walked up to Stenson on the practice range before the third round wearing a construction hard hat. "I'm ready to play with you now," he told Stenson.

Later, Stenson told reporters, "It was a fun joke. I don't know if you guys understood why, but it was funny."

Re: Stenson Gets Disqaulified !!??

Obviously he wanted to quit, otherwise he could've asked his caddie, or just sign a score high enough to avoid disqualification. I mean if he doubted between 7 and 8, he could've written 8 or 9 (overscored cards are valid and signed scores with extra strokes prevail over the real ones).

Hahahaha...one o' these days someone's gonna zing Tiger like that...we'll see if he has as good a sense of humor as The Ice Man...I predict he will. Reluctantly, lol. Every good golfer is a hothead...if yer heart's not in it, yer not that good. That's really what separates the men from the boys...who wants it the most...at that particular time. Every one of us has that in us..."I'm tired of finishin' second. it's my turn! Henrik's not done makin' headlines.
