I was talking to a former PGA Tour player this past weekend who I probably shouldn't name because he made the following comments off the record to me. But he was commenting on what he claims as the ONLY reason men are even remotely interested in the LPGA -
"Come on let's be honest here, the only reason men give a **** about the LPGA is for erotic interests only, not the so-called quality of golf. It's ridiculous to think otherwise. If guys want to watch for quality of golf, or to see a set of great skills, they watch the men's tour. I guarantee if there was no T&A on the ladies tour they wouldn't get a man alive to watch that stuff."
I was a little surprised at the comment, but after reflecting on it, there's probably an awful lot of truth in it. Just wondering what others' thoughts may be on it?
Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
Maybe for most males. I watch because I like golf of all qualities. I watch ladies golf because of gals like Pat Hurst, Laura Davies, A. Sorenstam, Nancy Lopez (back in the day), and a host of other very talented players. I also watch some Nationwide, Seniors, and Amateur golf.
That guy may have it right for most of the hokies who really don't care, or even know much about the great sporting game of golf, but for me, he's way way way off base.
Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
wait wait wait.. there is interest in the LPGA?
I kid, but seriously this argument holds no water for me. I can't claim to be a fan, but the few times I have tuned in, there were only a handful of attractive ladies on the course. If it were all about sex appeal don't you think there would be more women's swimming fans or something?
I think it has a following the same way that minor league sports have a following. Sure, I don't see the same quality athletes and competition when I watch the minor league hockey team here or the arena football team, but it is a fun time and I love watching the sports--no matter the level of play.
Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
I watch the LPGA for the same reason I enjoy the WTA, I love athletics performed at the highest levels.
If looks were everything in women's sports, would there be no professional women's sports? It's not like your average golf or tennis professional is drop dead gorgeous.
They are, however, supremely talented and superbly conditioned. Any sports fan understands the appeal.
I like watching professional golf on TV period - I enjoy the Champions Tour b/c I see a lot of former PGA Tour players still out there having fun and competing.... and I enjoy the LPGA b/c I too, enjoy watching their swings and quite frankly, some of them are rather easy on the eyes. I also enjoy the Nationwide Tour b/c sooner or later some of them will be seen on the PGA and then at least I'll know a little something about them.
Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
so does that mean we're not aloud to watch women's golf?, watching annika dominate has nothing to do with my "erotic interests", I do admit with the gulbis, creamers, and pressels out there people get distracted, it is still good golf no matter what
Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
Let your buddy on the PGA know that the only reason we watch is because the PGA is so Predictable. It could be renamed Tiger and the other fellas. There is only one true lead actor on the PGA WIth Two minor roles going to (Micky and VJ) while the LPGA is full of melodramas between rivals youth versus age the young guns versus each other and to speak the truth the T&A as your buddy so crudely put it is not that good on the LPGA just the odd shot of Laura Davies is enough to damper any feelings of the erotic nature. In Fact I believe the Micky has bigger T's than most of the Girls on The LPGA anyway. There certainly are bigger A's on the PGA from the sound of it though.

sure its nice to watch, paula creamer and nat gulbis, but the main reason i watch is because i like the fact that they play more at a level of my golf game, distance wise and mistake wise. there is almost no comparison between me and a pga pro, but i can compare my game with an lpga player.

Great comment. The LPGA has real appeal to me because the girls play a more strategic style of golf. They are just not bombing it a million miles and pulling out the sand wedge. Yes it is delightful to see the girls looking spunky but I watch because of the high standard and my admiration of their short game skills. In summary , outside of the Majors, I get sick of 'target' golf.

Re: The only reason men have any interest in the LPGA
Of all professional sports, golf probably has the most parity in skill level.
Watching a WNBA game is like watching a bad Division IV scrimmage. Women's hockey is choppy and boring because nobody is ever controlling the puck. Tennis is tennis, and just plain uninteresting. Women's boxing is embarrassingly bad because Ali just manhandles some unfortunate opponent with normal hormone levels
The only problem I have with the LPGA is that they get to tee off halfway down the fairway. I'm obviously exaggerating, but you get the point.
I don't think that people watch the LPGA for T and A. You'd be better off looking out your front window or going for a walk at the mall or hospital
