Anyone think Mickelson is really close to being back to form?

I didn't watch a lot of the tournament, but on Sunday, he seemed to be hitting the ball really well. He just couldn't make any putts. It seemed like if his putting had been decent, he could have easily shot a 65 or lower. I think once he gets that fixed, he'll be in great shape.

I'm not sure. Right after he made the coaching switch to Butch and at the Players' it looked like Phil was going to really get hot. But we really haven't seen much of a "100%" Phil since then, as far as health goes with his wrist. I don't think Phil will be much of a factor for the rest of this season, but next season I think we should start seeing him contending in majors again.

Re: Anyone think Mickelson is really close to being back to form?

I have been thinking for the last 60 weeks: he will never win another major.
  • 2006 Open Championship T22
  • 2006 PGA Championship T16
  • 2007 Masters Tournament T24
  • 2007 US Open MC
  • 2007 Open Championship MC
  • 2007 PGA Championship T32

I think about Palmer losing the 1966 US Open, Watson the 1984 Open Championship, Norman the 1996 Masters. We didn't know then they were done as major championship contenders.

There are reasons why Phil isn't the same player (fiddling with the swing, wrist injury, poor putting). But mainly I think his confidence was shattered at Winged Foot, and he'll never be the same.

He is too talented to not continue winning, and he'll post plenty of top five major finishes. But I don't think he will ever win another grand slam event.

Hopefully I am dead wrong.

Every player has his ups and downs...Phil will be back, just give him time.

I think Phil can still win majors, age isn't a factor yet. Look at Vijay, he's 44 and he can still win majors, although its been a few years.

I think you're probably wrong. His confidence was shaken at the US Open, for sure, but to come back at win The Players this year was pretty big. Once he gets completely healthy, and is able to practice with Butch a lot, I think he will regain World #2, and win multiple majors in the future.

I agree that Phil's iron play looked pretty good. What's odd is that his putting is usually his strong suit but it has been letting him down lately. Maybe Butch has been messing with it some?

Re: Anyone think Mickelson is really close to being back to form?

Phil is done for the year. He will start off 08 a little slow and then explode.
He still has some wins left in him. With his injury and new coach, he just needs a little time.

That is my prediction.

It seems like everytime he does get back to form something happens to knock him off form.

Re: Anyone think Mickelson is really close to being back to form?

Phil will still win some more, I believe because of his short game. Majors I think would be out of reach for him now. I'll have to wait for a year and see what he can do with Butch before closing the book on him.

^^ 7 more majors *****, i dont need to translate what that means, phil is good but he doesnt have 7 more in him, he needs to get his focus back and drive it better

Last edited by shaderunner : August 22nd, 2007 at 10:52 PM. Reason: no translation needed...don't use that acronym here.

Oh, just too funny. That was one of the best jokes I've heard lately.
