I heard that Phil is mad because Finchem asked for his suggestions on how the fedex cup should be run last year, and then when the time came, he ignored everything that phil said. So Phil feels that he isn't under any obligation to play, and would rather spend time with his family.

He's not under any obligation, unless you consider playing an active role in promoting the sport that has made him a millionaire an obgligation. He's a little out of touch with the working class. I mean, he said something about not wanting to miss his kids first day of school? I have to miss mine, and it's not because I have to play in a world class golf tournament either.
Keep in mind, Phil is my favorite golfer. I admire that he is family oriented, but cmon. You owe it to the fans and the PGA to play. That was fantastic drama, seeing him and Tiger going at it.
I wish I understood how the Fedex-Cup scoring system worked: Then I might be able to estimate whether he has an obligation to himself to pick up some points in an effort to win the Fedex-Cup! Of course this would not be an easy task, because I would have to guess how much a week off might benefit him the next week.... But right now, I am completely in the dark!
I must admit that him not wanting to miss his kid's 1st soccer game doesn't quite do it for me. Phil's family has benefitted $plenty$ from him joining the PGA-circus. I won't get too worked up about that though, because Phil will be Phil, and I do like that about him!
I agree... I mean all he can really do is watch his kids get on the bus, or drop them off at school. He's not going to go in and follow them around all day or anything. Watching him and Tiger go at it on Monday was great! Ah well I guess, he's rich, he can do whatever he wants.
If Phil wins in Atlanta, taking off this week means nothing as far as the Fed Ex cup is concerned. I think his excuse about the kids is a little lame, and I like Phil. The real reason he isn't playing has to do with his problems with Finchum. My guess is that it does have to do with scheduling, but I don't think Phil is the only one who doesn't like the playoff schedule, especially on the heels of the PGA and Bridgestone. I'll bet there is a change next year - except that you've got the Ryder Cup to schedule around....
