Gary Players Captians pick for the Presidents cup: Mike Weir

I have to say that Gary Players captains pic for this weeks Presedents cup came at a shock to me.

After Weir had good showings at the AT&T and the British Open, things were looking promising for the lefty. However, I had expected that the W/D and the MC at Firestone and the PGA meant he was no longer being considered.

I also thought that with Ames being a Canadian citizen and in the final group on Sunday at the PGA were signs that he may get the knod, but that didnt happen.

Will Weir rise to the ocation?

good question. I just say I sure hope so! I was also surprised that he got the captain's pick but ratings in the hosting country may have played a role. Regardless it should be fun to watch. Just hope Mike wears that collared shirt!! lol

If the Internationals lose narrowly and Weir performs poorly then Player will have a lot to answer too. Weir has not been picked on form. The Canadians would just about boycott the event if the little fellar was not picked. I think he can rise to the occassion.

Weir was picked because it probably would be nice for the international team to have the home field advantage. Without Weir on the team us canadians would be more likely to cheer for the americans (ok a bit of a stretch). As far as Ames as a choice to soothe the Canadian hearts he's about as much a Canadian as Sorenstam is an American. His opionionated loud mouth attitude would only fit in Canada if he was a Hockey Comentator, wore loud suits, and had a dog named Blue. As a Canadian Thank you Gary, no matter how you slice it we cant do much worse than the boys have done in the short history of this competition, at least now I care a little(ok a bit of a stretch there to).

How do you like me now - Wier seems to be the pick of the International Litter 2-1-1. Still dont care that much.

Gary Player is a genius! He chose the right man for the right job, and Mike Weir stepped up Big Time!

Like Aaron Baddeley, Weir has been working very hard on the Stack & Tilt swing, and has finally proven to the world that the S&T does work. When Eldrick was working on his "latest" swing a couple of years ago, he had an up and down season. Same with Mike. His swing is coming to fruition, and you are now starting to see the results of his hard work.

Congratulations to Mike Weir for beating the best in the world, one on one. The S&T Lives!

Super performance by Mike Weir . Great to see and his efforts will hopefully give him the confidence to win on Tour. He certainly handled the pressure big time. Well done.

Possibly one of the best captains picks of all time. You wouldnt find more of a team player either. He did beat tiger, but tiger handed him a few holes early!

Made me nervous after bad bogey on 14, but solid finish 16-18!
