Tiger Woods President's Cup Performance

I am rating Tiger's performance at the President's Cup based strictly on his performance in relation to his capability. He is the greatest golfer, but absolutely under performs in the Ryder and President's Cup.

I think Phil finally looked comfortable in the leaders role this week, but Tiger just does not take a team on his back like Jack and Arnie used to. It may be the last thing on Tiger's career where he does not compare well with Arnie and Jack. His record playing with others and alone is not indicative of the greatest golfer on earth (which he is). In fact, on Sunday, he played a little better than average striking the ball, but could not sink a putt.

What causes him to stink (comparatively) at these events?

I think he is trying to keep emotion out of his game, but also wants to get emotional about playing for his country, and this internal fight throws him off. He should play as if the other player said something overnight and needs to learn a lesson. Just my thoughts.

Tiger has never performed well in team events even as a amateur. I have two reasons he doesn't perform well. 1) It simply doesn't mean that much to him. In that case, maybe he should not play. 2) He is not in total control like he is in a individual tournament.

It must be strange for tiger, week in week out he has most of these guys for breakfast, then he is supposed to partner/play alongside them. Maybe he fels they arent good enough,he has questioned other pro's work ethic before.

Bingo. He can't skip the event, he'd be viewed as unamerican, but I don't think he cares at all about playing in these things. He's about individual titles, which is what golf is really all about.

What are you gonna do? Not invite Tiger anymore to the Ryder Cup or President's Cup? :)

Well if you saw him and mike weir go at it then you know that it was one of the best match event matchups in a long time. Tiger made an amazing comeback and Mike Weir had the crowd carrying home... It was awesome.

Re: Tiger Woods President's Cup Performance

Now wait a second. Tiger did not play that well on Sunday.

Weir missed a relatively easy putt on 10 to almost go up 4, Tiger won 12 with a birdie on a very birdie-able hole. He won the 14th (short par 4 that everyone was birdie-ing) with a par and was conceded the 15th when Weir put the ball in the water. You are overstating the match and Tiger's play.

I would agree it had a lot of interest, but the play of the 2 players was not that impressive compared to many of the other pro's that day. I had Tiger down for a 70 and Weir down for a 68.

Re: Tiger Woods President's Cup Performance

I can't really be sure what goes on in this head, but I think playing in team format is very different with playing individually where he can focus on his game, his swing, where he wants to hit the ball. In a team you're concentration is divided from playing your game and communicating with your team mate. Plus the responsibility of letting your team mate down, so perhaps he does not play riskier shot that he would've when playing alone. It's just a different mental situation, and I think that's why he does not play well in a team.

Re: Tiger Woods President's Cup Performance

I think that tiger has a pretty good singles record (with the exception of the latest Presidents cup). I think the problem may be with the guy he gets teamed with thinking great I've got tiger I cant lose and under performing. Also the opposing team is always suppose to lose so they got nothing to lose and no pressure. They can play free and loose. Just a thought.

I agree with your reasons to some extent, but he definitely plays differently in match play. I know his record is OK, but he is held to a higher standard and should be almost undefeated based on his skills. This is the best golfer in the world. I think the issue is within Tiger. I don't think his scores or play even come close to his "regular season" score and play. A good example was his match against Weir. His play was lackluster and really not impressive. A loose opponent can explain only so much.

Re: Tiger Woods President's Cup Performance

I've always hated matchplay. I dont think it determines the best player in the field just the luckiest. All you have to do is look at Geoff Olgivy at last years World Match Play event. There were 10 times that his opponents had a chance to win standing over there putt and they missed. I'm sorry but thats just pure luck he didnt win the other guys lost and he had the good fortune to play them that round. As far as tiger not being any good at the matchplay hasnt he won the World matchplay like 2 or 3 times and has a record of 21 and 4 and there is the matter of the US amateur 3 times in a row. I will agree that his record is ordinary in the President and Ryder Cups (I personally dislike trying to make a solo event a team event and therefore dont quite get these exibitions).
