Re: Tiger refuses an interview after loss to Mike Weir
I don't think refusing an interview is cool, people in Tiger's position is at the very least required to give interviews even if it's just to say, publicly, well done to Mike, and wish him well. Not giving an interview looks to me he's being a sore loser. Of course I may be wrong, only Tiger knows the real reason he refused an interview.
Re: Tiger refuses an interview after loss to Mike Weir
I think this is an example of a double standard here. If it were someone like Sabatini they'd rip him, but because it's Tiger no one wants to offer it up as perhaps an episode of arrogance?
I don't know. Overall I like the guy, but sometimes I think he's just not very congenial, and that's not good, no matter what your status. We're all human beings, so to me there's no excuse for lack of congeniality from anyone. Even from one of the top 5 golfers in the world.
Re: Tiger refuses an interview after loss to Mike Weir
I'm sure he wasn't exactly happy with himself with blowing a match in the final two holes including losing his ball in the drink. And I'm sure he knew the interview was going to be 'So what happened on those last two holes Tiger?' or 'How do you feel that you just choked?'.
He still shook Wier's hand, he still did the team interview later on and spoke well about his teammate and the event. How much of a good sport is he required to be? I think anyone would be pretty irate at themselves at that point and he showed class in his actions towards his teammate. Who really cares that we didn't get to hear him explain how bad it felt to lose the match?
But I guess to answer the actual question posted, I think it was #1 and I don't see anything wrong with it.

It wouldnt have taken a little bit more 'energy' to have said a few words.Lack of courtesy a lesser player would have been slaughtered for it,but because its tiger he's tired and drained.

There was an article in the New York Times several years ago about Tiger being guarded in interviews because when he was unscripted, he was too much of a smart aleck. There was concern he wouldn't appeal to a mass audience. Perhaps he, his advisors or the companies he endorses think it's best to err on the side of caution and have him not speak at all depending on how he's played.
Re: Tiger refuses an interview after loss to Mike Weir
Let's face it, Tiger would be one of the most sought after interviews at any event. Knowing this, years ago he issued to the media some of the criteria for granting interviews. I don't remember them all, but here are a few I recall.
If it's a major
if he is the defending champion
if it's a new tourney for him
if he's in the lead
The fact that he chose not to particpate outside the team interview I feel is refreshing. I would rather the spotlight rightly be on Weir and how he won rather than Tiger and how he lost.
Re: Tiger refuses an interview after loss to Mike Weir
He's done it before...I don't necessarily think Tiger is a sore loser, but he's not a particularly gracious one, either, especially when compared to the guys whose records he's shattering/nearing. I think Diane's on to something...the few times I've caught Tiger's post-round interview after a loss, he was not very gracious...he would mention his opponent but usually it was full of "I just " or "I hit it like " I think it's gotten to where if Tiger doesn't win the commentators don't even think about getting the interview, they know he won't do it, especially if it's a particularly disappointing loss. Even Tiger could stand a dose of humility. But, hey, he's a golfer, not a politician or diplomat...yet.
