It has been announced today that Stuart has been nominated as the Victorian state finalist in the Australian of the Year. What a great honour for a guy who has fantastic golfing skills and has a very active 'Children's Foundation' here in Australia. His charity work and devotion to his home town of Cohuna and his country is a tribute to Apples. The award is announced on 25th January 2008.
Just speaking to his golf - I always viewed Stuart as a great underachiver given his obvious talent. He has been heralded as the next Norman for years but seems happy to play well in a couple tournaments and hover in the rest. I think its a consistency thing. I know the guy has had some real personal issues over the years but I think he has never really lived up to his ability. Here hoping this is the year.
I don't think Appleby is "happy to play well in a couple of tournaments and hover in the rest". I know he wants to win all his tournaments. I know he's happy for Goeff Oglvie, but he thought he would be the next Aussie to win a major. In an article I read about Appleby, he talked about his personal disappointment in not winning more, not just majors. He needs a real break-out year where he's truely a force on the PGA - perhaps this will be the year. I like him too and would like to see him do well. I would hate to see all the young Aussies pass him by before he gets a major.

I'm a huge fan of all the Australians on tour. I'm actually a little surprised that their games don't allow them to win more often, especially Stuart's

Good to read your comments. We are proud of our Aussie performances. Over recent times the lack of success has been discussed, especially the failure to win after being in contention after three rounds. No one can pinpoint any reasons but I am sure the tide will turn. Thank you and good golfing.
Has anyone read his most recent interview on Golf Digest? Appleby is not only a great Aussie but a seriously courageous person....not only did he goto the states to test his skills with practically nothing, but he also survived a serious family tragedy....I really hope he wins a major soon...he's got the intestinal fortitude to do it.
