John Daly's behavior is and was a novelty. However, the novelty is only entertaining when it is accompanied by results. He needs to drink and play awesome golf. Recently, he only proved that he can drink. He can no longer laugh at the naysayers.
All he has proven is poor habits and unhealthy vices are the path to failure. What was appealling to the blue collar element in the golfing community was a "good ol' boy" could behave outlandishly and still preform in the sport.
The face of golf has changed. The fitness van is more popular than the Bar & Grill. Millions of dollars are at stake and the "Good ol Boys" of today are working out and saving the drinks and celebration for after the tourney not during.
He's free to do whatever he likes, and owes nothing to any of you, so I really don't see why this stuff upsets people so much. If anything I'd blame the people who actually condone his antics and make it so easy for him to get away with it
Does anyone know whether or not JD actually has a positive net worth?
Or do his (gambling & other) debts actually exceed his savings?
It's tough to know where the balance lies today, but excerpts of his biography talked about several times when he needed to make the cut in the tournament he was playing in so he could pay off his gambling debt. As in, he had to make the cut to get a paycheck, otherwise the people he owed money to might change into "we break knees" mode. So, there have been times his balance has been negative.
I suspect that not a lot has changed. I doubt he's too far from zero on either side.
IMO
john daly wasted his talent
sure, he was inconsistent
but he threw it all away
its disappointing, really,
to see him crumble like this
its as if he doesnt care anymore
but thats his choice
he needs to make room for the new up and coming talent
and he should just stop
or at least do something with his game
There was a story around a while back, don't know how true it was...
JD passed by the fitness trailer one day and saw Tiger working out. JD tells Tiger that he's going for a beer and asks if he'd care to join him. Tiger declines, saying he needs to stay there and finish his workout. JD chides him for not hanging out enough, especially with all his talent, to which Tiger replies "John, if I had as much natural talent as you, I wouldn't have to work so hard!"
Daly's talent is unmistakable. You don't win 2 majors just falling off the truck. The thing that's amazing is he's not even working at it. If he ever took himself seriously, he might have been that guy all this time that Tiger had to stare down. Instead, he made countless bad decisions that have basically cost him the opportunity to be one of the great champions of his time. He'll probably say he never cared for the fame and glory, but that's mostly a cop out from fear of success. As much as he likes to give to others, being more successful by working just a bit harder would give him more opportunity for charitable work.
What I do frown on is the "Michelle Wie"-ing of John Daly; that is giving him exemptions just because he's a gate draw. He's not reliable to show up for pro-ams or tourney days, and that just takes the spot from a young eager up and comer. How many times has he withdrawn from a tournament, and that guy who was the next alternate on the list wanted to strangle him?
I'd say it's sad what's happened to him, and it would be if it didn't repeat itself time and time again. Now, it's not sad, it's actually disgusting and disappointing.
The guy is without a doubt a fun person to be around, he has a serious drinking problem and needs to be commited to a rehab center. He probably doesn't think he has a problem and that is going to kill him. If he wakes up soon enough he will be alright. I would love to have a couple of beers with him , the difference is I know when to stop and he doesn't
I went to the Zurich Classic yesterday and saw some of the Big John phemomenon. Here's where things get a bit problematic - there were quite a few kids there wearing John Daly apparel. He's very good and popular with the kids. Don't know if it's just the colorful lion logo, or his everyman style and the fact that he seems to be infinitely approachable, but there were a lot of John Daly autographs, t-shirts, hats, etc on youths. Now, we know better than to allow our kids to have too much idol worship of anyone, and I don't even think JD himself would consider himself a role model. But there is a line to walk here - he's good with the kids and that's not a bad thing. As long as the kids understand that you shouldn't live the life he's lived (or try to copy his swing!) and that he, like all adults, comes with flaws, its he's not a bad man. I have often questioned his invites to tournaments - he withdraws a lot and hasn't played enough on the weekends. But seeing the kids with all the Daly paraphernalia, maybe some of the sponsors have got it right...
No doubt he is fantastic with and to the fans. Every time I have followed him in person he has done something incredibly kind and thoughtful for the fans. Just hope he can get the bottle out of his life--he obviously can't control it so total abstinence is the only thing that will work. **** demon alcohol!!
