Re: Key to Ryder Cup Win
I think the US squad needs to do things differently. For many reasons, the European squad has cameraderie on their side - the beat us because they seem to care more about the team. We won't do that - those days are gone. American golfers don't share rides down back roads anymore; they don't share hotel rooms. The best of the best don't play practice rounds with the other best of the best, or have dinner together. They are loners. Tiger's buddies aren't people who pose any challenge to him. Nor are Mickelson's. Don't know who Furyks' friends are. So instead of forcing them to get chummy and taking them out of their mode, they should be allowed to be individualistic in their approach to the matches. Don't worry as much about making them get together and "bonding"; it's not going to happen. Those days are long gone on the PGA Tour. Let them practice how they want until the week of the Cup. Put Tiger and Furyk together as much as possible, since they seem to work well together, or with another solid striker like Cink. Put Phil with a young gun; Phil won't worry about anything but his own game, and the young gun will work harder to keep up. Boo Weekly and Hunter Mahan come to mind...
We need to not get caught up in trying to be more like the Europeans - they have us beat in the "Us against the world" mentality. We have to play our game and use that loner pound you down attitude to our advantage...
