I am going to be a tracker for one of the players tomorrow at the US Open Challenge. Recording yardage to green, lies etc... for each shot/putt. Will get an up close and personal look at the condition of the course and report back. Should be fun.
Reporting back on the round at Torrey today--Golf Digest Challenge. The first and second cuts of rough are no big deal which leads me to believe that the biggest issue with the course will be the extreme distance. The primary cut is brutal though and it is particularly bad on hole numbers 2 (right), 4 (right), 5 (left and right), 6 (right), 10 (right), 13 (left), 14 (right is all-time brutal), 15 (right) and 17 (left). Hole 18 left about 220 out is absolutely silly stuff. On the right, out about 300 yards was the worst lie I ever say in my life. So too, Greens were kind of slow today (probably 9 to 11). I loved the way holes 4, 13, 15 and 18 are way cut down in front of the greens. On 13 today, Timberlake hit a shot that was short of the green and it rolled back down the hill forty yards. The fairways were incredibly perfect kikuya. Traps were not "fluffly" with buried lies as I was told they would be. I was assigned to Tony Romo to track the distances of his shots. He really has game and is long. Drives averaged 305-311. He has a lot of talent with a fine touch. Caddies included Greg Norman, Butch Harmon and Dr. Rotella. Justin Timberlake has a fine swing and a great touch. What a swell time! Hole 13 from the back tees is just a spectacular view from the tee--245 to carry the canyon! The course will favor the big bangers because the first and second cuts of rough are not penal, at all! I got to figure the USGA is going to speed up the greens though. After being inside the ropes for 18 holes today and seeing the course up close and personal, my prediction for the winning score moves down to five under. Cheers
