It didn't work out for him. He has the length to play with a 3 wood, but I think he was under 50 percent on fairways. Might as well play driver. Phil needs to be himself and just let it fly. Play with confidence, none of this chicken 3 wood defeatist attitude stuff.

I disagree ... have you seen the rough out there? Hitting a club you can't keep in the fairway is suicide at the US Open. I don't think it is defeatist at all. Rather, I would suggest smart play for Phil would be to hit 5 wood or a hybrid off the tee if he can't keep the 3 wood in the fairway. His short game is good enough for him to score well without length if he just stays out of trouble. If he can just put together a few birdies on short par 4s and the par 5s and get by with par everywhere else, he'll do fine.

Exactly. Phil plays his best when he plays a little looser and doesn't over analyze. He's a better driver than Tiger and needs to take advantage of that one area. Just step up and hit it, Phil!
The 3 wood strategy is actually putting more pressure on him to hit fairways, and it has not worked out.
I am not sure where the pundits muster up the audacity to question Phil's decision. How could they possibly have the information to make the correct call? Only Phil has the correct information available to him to make that call, and there is no way to find out whether or not he used it correctly. I wonder what they would have said if he had brought his driver and sprayed that?
