Why would anyone stop paying attention to John Daly. He is fascinating to watch. This is not the issue. He is still a very good player but he sets the wrong example for current players and more importantly the next generation of golfers.
The vast majority of tour professionals are extremely well behaved and I could list a hundred plus players who are testimony to this. JD is in the absolute minority.
I don't play on public courses but I can see your point that there would be many who act in the way that JD does. In saying that every club has 'rotten apples' and they must be kept under control.
In closing JD is his own enemy but he will find support from many people because of his playing ability and social predicament. There will also be an equal number who feel the same way as I do and personally I wish him all the very best in the future.
I think the saddest thing is that he's been blessed with a wonderful gift and, for the most part, has thrown most it away. He still could be near the top of golfers in the world, but continually makes choices than give him no chance to reach anywhere near his potential. The first time he went wacky was funny, the next unfortunate, and now it's just pitiful. He's like a wreck on the highway: you want to look away, but can't avoid staring.
If you think walking off courses during tournaments, turning up under the influence of liquor, throwing golf clubs, not honouring sponsorship agreements ete etc etc is not in the best interest of the game then I must be missing YOUR point.
more people than john daly have walked off during a tournament.
more people than daly has a few beers
even tiger woods has thrown a golf club before AND BIG JOHN DOESNT EVEN DO IT OFTEN
not in the best interest in the game??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? who says you have to be interested!
Although quite a few of his actions cannot really be defended, one thing is for sure: people love him and have a lot of interest in him. This thread kind of proves it. He is kind of like Michele Wie--a side attraction of an incredibly gifted golfer that people just like to watch. So, sponsor exemptions keep coming. I just wish he would get in better shape, stop drinking so much and come back to form!!
I read his book a couple of years ago, and it gave a great insight into his life. I have always been a fan of Daly's. I don't agree with a lot of things that he has done, but I can't condemn him for them. If he is finally enjoying life, I say more power to him.
