Dare I hope for a Colin Montgomerie win in the Open Championship?
He's playing at home with few more chances to win the tournament that would mean more to him than to anyone else in the field. For one, I would love to see him cap his distinguished career with a win tomorrow.
Isn't it unAmerican to root for Mrs. Doubtfire? Sorry, I didn't mean that. It's just that I read Colin absolutely hates that reference. Having gone through a long and painful divorce myself, I have to pull for him (ok just a little) because I know how hard it is to focus on anything else when you're going through the divorce process. Much less play Major Championship golf at your home course.
I say "Go Colin"....but not too loud, cuz old "rabbit ears" (again, Sorry) would probably hear it and give me that Monty scowl!
Funny stuff, lg. Yeah, v-man, I'd be down for a Monty victory tomorrow. I used to root for him all the time to win The Open Championship, but when it started to appear his ship had sailed, I started looking for someone else.
But then, The Open is such a great victory that it's usually a great story line for whoever wins it (exception: 1999; Van de Velde was the story that year). Todd Hamilton, Ernie, Phil, Retief, Tiger... I could see myself rooting for any of these guys, too.
I'll probably pick my favorite somewhere around the 70th hole....
Excepting the "grouchy" maveric, I feel myself in the company of good and reasonable--and funny--men in rooting for Monty. This final round promises to be an exciting one, with--as Jim says--many potentially great story lines.
I'm not afraid to pull for Monty. I think he has gotten a raw deal in the press. He is a great golfer that has gone through some bad times, just look at what his divorce did to him. A measure of a true champion is how he handles adversity. I think he is doing well. Go Monty!!!!!
As a lefty, if Phil is ever in contention, I'll root for him, but it would be cool for Monty to win on his own course. The ovation for him on Saturday was huge, it'd be a nice story.......
