I'm sorry, the Open was unwatchable

The TV coverage was terrible. I really like Mike Tirico (sp?), but Faldo has to learn when to talk and when to say nothing. With Sutton, Finch and Faldo, there are too many 'color' commentators. Finch clearly is the easiest to listen to. But these new guys should be given a chance and maybe with time, they will become what most golfers will like in commenting on the play.

The announcers are not the reason this telecast was unacceptable. THERE WERE COMMERCIAL BREAKS EVERY 5 MINUTES!!!  Maybe ABC had trouble getting enough ad revenue for this event and had to show more commercials, but if that's the case, don't even bother to bid on the next TV contract for the British when it comes up. Due to some other commitments on Sat, I didn't watch much of the coverage, but couldn't wait for the final round on Sun a.m. Instead, I found myself flipping channels after watching the same annoying ads literally every 5 min. Then I would flip it back, only to have missed a crucial shot, only to be followed by another break. After awhile, I think I found the Weather Channel more interesting to watch.

Anyone else get frustrated at the coverage or is it just me?

I think all sporting events have too much commercialism involved. Have you seen the PGA website lately? It has more pop-ups then MSN. It is becoming totally disgusting. The only way to stop it would be to quit watching tv altogether. How would one accomplish that in this day and age?

ABC's golf broadcast team is clearly in disarray after the departure of Curtis Strange, who was no prize himself, but at least made an occasional insightful observation and wasn't afraid to criticize poor play or bad decisions. The group they have now is just annoying unless Peter Alliss (sp?) makes an appearance. Clear out the whole tower team and start over. Judy Rankin deserves a shot at the tower at 18! Hal Sutton is a nice guy but no announcer. Nick Faldo is neither a nice guy nor an announcer. Baker-Finch is innocuous. Tirico isn't getting any better or more interesting. ABC's coverage is clearly the weakest of the three major networks.

I must not have been paying that much attention. I had the open on all morning, but didn't notice an excessive amount of commercials. All I can say is God Bless Martha Burke and what she did for the Masters But being up at 3 A.M. when they tee'd off Pacific Time, I might have not had the most sharpest of senses as to what was going on.

Must be nice, the only tournament like that over here is the Masters.

Agree

I enjoyed the extended coverage, but the number of commercial breaks was excessive, in my opinion.

The BBC gets its golf coverage right. I listened to BBC radio coverage on the internet last year, and it was great. But, its lack of commercials comes at a price: government support, which means higher taxes.

OK guys, here's your choice: commercial-less golf or higher taxes. Which do you want?

Tivo is a system that you put on your TV, that allows you to record the shows you like and replay them when you want - even a live event. You could be watching the Open, go back to watch a shot, then pick up where you left off. Basically, it's a big hard drive that records TV for you.

I didn't watch much until the final round - I taped it, starting at 6:00 a.m., Pacific time. Then sat up all night and watched it after the wife and kid went to bed.... Tried not to learn who won it, but was unwillingly exposed to the news at one point. Still, didn't know how Hamilton won it, so I was surprised to see it go to a playoff.

I was actually thinking, at one point, that there weren't as many commercial breaks as I expected, although they did milk the playoff. Then again, it's hard to tell with a tape, scooting over the commercials. They did mess up a few times, in terms of cutting to a shot of someone getting ready to shoot, then changing immediately to someone else.

I found Faldo and Finch to be entertaining. At one point they involved in slight verbal sparring about Els' putting. Faldo made some good observations and was kind of funny. IMO anyone is better the Strange. Then again, I am still ****** at him for hosing Lehman for the Ryder Cup to take Zinger and Verplank(who is horrible).

Aren't they the same choice? :)

I get your question, though---put me down in the 'commercial' category....my taxes are high enough. It did seem like ABC ran lots of ads, but if option 'B' is higher taxes, I'll sit through another Buick ad if need be...

My problem wasn't the Buick ads. It was the constant showing of ads apparently for the men watching golf that have a problem with the club between their legs. If a person has that problem, then contact your **** doctor, but please stop the ads about men with problems that no one likes to talk about in proper company. Even without those ads, there were way too many interuptions - I don't remember thinking this during the US Open telecast. The Masters don't count. Hopefully CBS has sold the proper amount of ads already for the PGA so they don't have to play even more ads to make the sponsors happy and make up for what I guess was poor ratings.
