I don't know why some people got mad at him wearing them. They are pants, they were made to be worn. If you are mad at somebody get mad at the per5son that made them.

the way i see it was well, is fair play to ian for trying to bring a bit of colour into the game! im just saying that i wouldnt wear them!
it was uncalled for the R&A trying to get him into bother over them.

I don't know about the Union Jack, but the Stars and Stripes are not to be worn as an article of clothing. I don't believe that there is any law forbidding such behavior, but the custom has always been that one simply doesn't do such things.

Knowing the conservative bent of the R&A, as well as the USGA, I wouldn't be surprised if either of them made a fuss over such a breach of protocol. In fact, rather than showing a love of country, such use of the national flag actually shows a lack of respect for one's country's traditions. Perhaps that is why the R&A protested at bit.

Do you really think that anyone will pay that much money for a pair of trousers? For the contribution to the hospital, I would hope so, but I really doubt it.

Poulter's Pants

Today's athletes are about marketability. More exposure = more endorsements = more $$$. See my face? Buy my product. There's nothing wrong with individuality, and making a buck is the American way, but there's a fine line between being one's self and and just being (or looking) foolish.

I credit Ian with using the publicity he gained by wearing the pants to help raise money for the hospital. That was an honorable and charitable thing to do. I'm just not sure that's what he had in mind when he drew attention to himself by wearing the pants in the first place.

Was it fun? For some. Did it hurt anyone? No. Was it disrespectful to his country's flag? That depends on your point of view but, I say probably. The bottom line is we're talking about Ian Poulter and I believe that was his plan from the start.

I always admired the late Payne Stewart's attire, which certainly set him apart from everyone else. His outfits were colorful and stylish too, more like what Poulter wore on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It is possible for one to be different and individual without being downright weird. Let's hope that Ian finds that fashionable standard before he suffers being labelled as simply odd.
