My inclination is to say no. It's like if you're going to place a bet. The field or Tiger. I think the smart money always goes with the field when it comes to golf. I think what I'm waiting for is the PGA Championship. First off, the course should be beautiful and I think Tiger is really gearing up for it. He's been "close" this whole season so we can see if it comes together for the final major.
Well his only "win" this year so far has been in match play. He has shown signs of getting it together lately, so I am going out on a limb and saying yes he will win the Buick. Isn't the PGA in less than a month?
The Buick open is coming up this thursday. So anyway does anyone think Tiger will be able to break his tournament drought or will it continue?
I spent a couple of hour there today (Warwick Hills) and VJ was lighting it up (63). I've played the course many times and it's easy to see why the winner shoots 20 under par (or more). These guys can putt and the greens are perfect! You almost know when you strike the putt if it's going in or not. If it's on line it's going in. There will be a ton of low scores this week because we've had a lot of rain, (all day Tuesday) the course is soft, and the players can fire at the flags. There's not a lot of trouble on this course so look for the guy with the hottest putter to be holding the trophy on Sunday.
i think if Tiger can keep his driver on the fairways he can definately win but he seems a little shaky in the box with out his old coach.......still seems to get it out of the rough and on the green better than anyone so just imagine if he can hit say 12 out of 18 fairways instead of his what 6 or 7 maybe lately....he is still finishing in the top 10 every week so he is so close but you can not be perfect year in and year out.....i think he ruined it when he just went crazy in 2001 and won just about everything and by more than a few strokes.......
GO TIGER!!!
yeah vijays putter has been his bread and butter as of late, also this course is pretty much wide open so if ya can keep it straight and putt well, it is his match to win.......i think Vijay will be up there on sunday but i have a feeling Tiger is gonna jump up today and hopefully compete on sunday!!!
Long putters :( I understand why pros use them (they are still legal) but I just can't find myself rooting for any pro that uses one.
I didn't follow VJ's group yesterday (I didn't want to fight the crowds following him) but saw his numbers getting lower and lower on the numerous scoreboards on the course. I see that he's switched back to a "conventional" putter for the first time in over 2 years.....that puts him back on my root for list!

Wow Jim Furyk is looking really good now back from that hand surgery, he shot a 66 & 67, i think he wants to defend that title pretty bad, i like him as a player and think he is a very good golfer but that swing has to be the ugliest in golf right now, i dont know how he gets that club face squared up with all that moving and twisting, seems to work well though......
Tiger is still on the 4th hole but is -1 for the day so far and Vijay is E.......

It looks like VJ came up a little "short" today! He's still right there and it will make for an interesting weekend. It's pouring here again so the course will be even softer tomorrow!
League..I ain't too good with geography, but are you close enough to go to the PGA next month? I went when it was at Sahalee here near Seattle a few years back. I had a blast, it was fun to watch the golfers during the practice rounds. Nice and relaxed, a lot of interaction with the gallery.

i can't speak for League, but I live about 30 min from him. I would guess that Whistling Straits is about a 6-8 hr drive away because you would have to drive thru Chicago and you never know what traffic you're going to get. Your observation about attending the practice rounds is right on the money. The overwhelming majority of Tour players are very approachable at that time - I would rather attend a practice round then attend the tournament itself. TV is the best way to watch a tournament.
You've got that right, greenguy! If you want to watch particular golfers and disregard the tournament, by all means attend in person; but if you are interested in the outcome of the tournament, stay home and watch TV.

No, I'm not close enough to Whistling Straits (8-10 hour drive) to even consider attending the PGA. From what I've seen of the course I'd love to go though. The Buick Open (at Warwick Hills) is about 20 minutes away and I try to go every year. I make it a point to go on Thursday or Friday so that I can watch the players struggling to keep their card or those that aren't playing all that well. The players you rarely (if ever) see on TV can really play too, and you don't have to fight for a position to see them hit shots. That way I can see how they play recovery shots from areas I find myself in way too often. :(
The practice range at a Tour event is an incredible place to learn. Television just doesn't let you see (or hear) the way the ball explodes off the club face when these guys hit it. They all are so wonderfully smooth and the range is where they all go after the round to work on their games. I've seen players be very serious and I've seen guys (and caddies) joking around, playing games and hitting trick shots. You won't see that on TV.
TV is by far the best place to watch any golf tournament, if you're into the drama of players in the last few groups battling it out. TV shows every shot from contending players and you just can't see that in person. Isn't Instant Replay a great thing? Sure, being there in person is always fun because you get caught up in the excitement of the crowd. (Did I mention the "Golf Babes?") You just can't see all the shots, and more often than not, you end up missing the deciding hole, or a pivotal shot, and wind up watching it on replay at home anyway. :(

Not to hijack the thread, but look at Big John Daly go. I'm so happy to see him playing well again. If he and Tiger can stay close thru Sunday, that will be one of the best final rounds ever.
