PGATOUR.COM - Barron first to violate PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program

PGA Tour golfer banned for doping - CNN.com

Quote:
Unheralded American Doug Barron has become the first player to be banned by the PGA Tour for taking performance-enhancing drugs.

The 40-year-old has been given a one-year suspension.

He is the first professional to fail a drugs test since the PGA and European Tours began their anti-doping programs in July 2008.

Re: Barron violates PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program

I think that it is important to note that there is always someone. Now, on the TOUR, this guy is truly a "nobody", but as all my arguments were in those prior threads, who knows how much his PE drugs helped or not, but the guy was taking spots away from someone else who deserved it much more.

These are the guys I suspect will be caught -- the guys just on the cusp of making it and the ones thinking "If only I could drive it 10 yards further" or "If only I could steady my nerves on those putts a little better". I doubt that any of the stars of the Tour will be caught -- they have far too much to lose. But the guys stuck down at the bottom of the money list have to extraordinarily tempted.

The true cynic in me says that the reason this guy got caught is because he hadn't earned enough to buy the good stuff that is undetectable ;)

Re: Barron violates PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program

A one-year suspension seems like a punishment that's too harsh just for taking a bit of drugs. And John Daly got suspended for 6 months just for getting drunk that one night. The PGA Tour seems to offer lots of harsh punishments.

Re: Barron violates PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program

Glad to see golf finally doing what other sports have been for years. Athletes, especially professionals, are role models for a lot of youngsters, so the message is passed on to them, also.

Re: Barron violates PGA TOUR Anti-Doping Program

The latest is that Doug Barron has signed on for a North Carolina minitour. It's a developmental circuit and they have no drug testing (nor policy) which costs big bucks.
