This is my first 'proper' golf discussion on here, so i have a few points for you lot to discuss!
1.Well done Luke Donald, great win, and Monty looks like he's in great form. If i was captain, i know who my two wildcards would be.
2.Whoever was the american broadcaster for the Buick, it was superb coverage. Usually its littered with commercials, but it wasn't so bad as i was expecting, probably due to a different station hosting. David Feherty is a great on course reporter, and the commentators seem more knowledgable and less annoying.
3. Vijay Singh and John Daly teeing off when Tiger and Franco were on the green annoyed me, he was literally standing over his putt, when the second ball landed. He didn't seem to acknowledge it, and maybe a bit of gamesmanship doesn't harm anyone, but i thought it was bad form from those two.
4. Vijay got away with murder at the end. He had a one shot lead, flushed it into the trees, slashed it about 6 feet and hit a great second shot, but i thought it was a huge break for him for Daly to make bogey and the last. Surprising for a player of his experience making a near costly mistake.
5. John Daly, would you guys consider him for a captains pick? I think the gallery he commands would be hugely intimidating, and his style of play suits the ryder cup perfectly.
6. What was Tiger wearing on Sunday?!

2. CBS always does excellent coverage of PGA Tour events. The worst, IMO, is ABC. Every time they do it, I just don't want to watch. Unfortunately, ABC took the British Open, so I didn't really have a choice. NBC isn't bad, but CBS is my favourite (that's right, I spelled "favourite" with a U ... cuz I'm Canadian! Canada rules!)
3. I didn't notice Vijay and Daly teeing off while Tiger and Carlos Franco were still on the green. Then again, I was out golfing myself for most of the round, so I guess I wouldn't have seen it unless it happened on 17 or 18. As it turns out, I didn't notice anything like that, so I guess it was earlier in the round. But I would expect them to have more respect than to shoot while people are still on the green.
4. After Vijay missed that par putt and bogeyed 18, I thought "OK, now J.D's gonna sink his putt and we'll see a playoff"...Daly misses his putt and I just sat there, wide-eyed, in awe. That must have been a HORRIBLE break! I thought it was amazing that Vijay missed it, but I figured out of the two of them, at least ONE would put the ball in the hole!
6. Tiger can wear whatever he wants! Still, I agree with you, that shirt was just strange. I guess that's where golf fashion is headed now...purple and sequins...but apparently it didn't affect his game for the worse.

This annoyed me, too. Vijay and Daly both drove their balls into greenside bunkers while Tiger and Franco were still on the green. This definitely surprised me that they would do this if they could reach the green.

No, I wouldn't. Even though he is playing well right now, he has such a history of melting down at inappropriate times. You would also be jumping over about 8 very qualified other players. I think the guys on the team already would want someone a little more stable...Verplank,Kelly, Herron type.

I wonder what Tiger would have done had the positions been reversed? Can you imagine the "stink" this would've caused if a ball hit Tiger or affected his putt in any way? Sure sets a bad example to follow when we play driveable par 4's doesn't it!
i agree that Vijay and Daly should have waited for Tiger to putt it first especially on a drivable par 4, i have never liked Vijay as a person, i think he is too arrogant for me.....i feel that was just wrong for him to hit it especially with Tiger over his ball, you noticed that he didn't even flinch at all, now that is concentration.....
Daly would be a great choice foe thr Rider cup team....
Tigers shirt looked awful and not his usual sunday red!!!
Just read Rich lerner's article on JD on TGC.com. A pairing of Tiger and Daly Would be fantastic for the US, and while i'm a European, i would love to see that. Tiger would be really fired up with the gallery they'd have, it'd be quality golf, even if they did play well and go a few points out of us!
Sure, John Daly is playing well, but he is far from earning his way on the team. Because people want to see a Woods/Daly pairing doesn't mean it's going to happen. Hal Sutton will stick to tradition and use his Captain's Picks on steadier, more reliable, and more deserving players. Can you imagine the damage to Sutton's reputation if he chose Daly and John relapsed? I like to watch Daly play but I'm not sure his play the last two years has earned him any more than casual consideration, at best.
There's a HUGE difference between bombing it at the Bridges and teeing it up for your country in the world's most pressure packed golf event. Daly hasn't shown that he can come close to handling that kind of pressure.
Now, before I get run over....I hope he continues his good play and earns his way onto the 2006 Ryder Cup Team.

I'm about as big of a John Daly fan as there is, but he's not consistant enough to warrant a Ryder Cup bid yet. When he's on, he's a great player to watch, which has averaged out to about two or three tourneys a year.
He can't handle the pressure? An Open win at St Andrews says otherwise.
That was nine years ago (1995). Until very recently, Daly hasn't shown he can handle anything golf related, much less the tremendous emotional (and peer) pressures of competing in the Ryder Cup.
Yes, winning in a play-off at St. Andrews was pressure, but today's professional golfers say they didn't know real pressure until they stepped to the first tee at their first Ryder Cup matches.
Another issue is Daly's peers. His act got real old, real fast, to a lot of pros who thought he was disrespecting the game. I'm not sure all is forgiven yet in that PGA locker room. Do his peers trust him enough to hold up under the pressure? Does most of America? Do you? Just askin......
I think Daly is ready to prove himself to america and his peers as well.....i think he has finally put his devotion to the game and not the bottle.....now if he could only stop smoking between holes, i just hate that especially with younger kids watching him puff on a cig before he tees it up.......
I say take Daly cause he hits it far and is putting better than ever!!!
Normally, I would agree that Veej and JD hitting into the next group would be rude, but imo there are a couple of considerations...they were playing at more of a brisk pace than TW and Franco and though they may have had a chance to reach the green the chances were slight, all the same. If I'm not mistaken I believe Tiger and Carlos were flirting with being put on the clock...very deliberate play. Hard to interrupt your rhythm by waiting for the guys to putt out on a 4-par. jm2¢
Ryder Cup picks - if I were Sutton it would be hard for me to ignore Jay Haas, for sure, and Cink and DiMarco would be hard to ignore for the last spot. Daly is playing well right now but it takes more than a hot streak to make the team. Battle at the Bridges was interesting...clutch putts win those things.
The only chance - and it's only a chance - JD gets on the team this year is to have a top 5 finish at the PGA. If he does that, he gets a 50-50 chance to be named. Sutton has said on several occasions he likes Verplank, so that's one pick I think is pretty much a lock. So it comes down to JD and anyone else between finishing 11-15 in Ryder Cup points for the 2nd pick. I haven't looked it up recently, but if my memory is close to being correct, I think it's players like Haas, Funk, Fletch, Cink, Kelly and I think Maggert is in there somewhere (he might be in the 10th position). If JD doesn't do well in the PGA, then my bet would be Kelly, if he doesn't automatically qualify by finishing in the top 10.
On a side note -one of the kids that is working this summer in our pro shop is home for the summer here in Michigan. He plays college golf for Sentenary (sp?) and I asked if Hal gets back often to his alma mater. He said he comes back to visit the guys a couple of times a year. When the kid won a college tournament this past year, Hal contacted him to congratulate him and gave him passes to the Ryder Cup since he knew it would be close to his home - Oakland Hills is only about 30 min away from here. Pretty heady stuff for a 19 yr old kid getting a call from Hal and getting passes from the team captain. And the young man is one of the hardest working guys on staff; just a real classy guy.
