I would think if he wants to stay married he'll probably take some time off to rebuild his marriage. Let's face it, Elin has alot to forgive, and the trust factor with a traveling husband is all but gone.
I would say he'll take most of 2010 off. Move to Sweden to their 'new' island and try to come to some kind of normalcy.
If he can regain her trust (if that's what he wants) and she completely forgives him... then the mass of golf fans will as well. I would say then at that time he will return and return to greatness as well.
It was reported on the internet and this evening (12/11/09) news that the Tiger is taking a leave from golf to be a better person, father and husband.
My personal guess is his wife won't let him out of the house! HA!
Won't affect my interest in the televised game...but I understand that ratings dropped 50 percent during the eight months he was re-habbing after knee surgery. Still, I think he's doing the right thing...hope he gets his together.

Shade
I mentioned his taking a year off to the wife before this recent news came out and posted that I thought Steve Williams could give thought to retiring...Tiger's choice is probably the best although I think this story is going to linger until he gets in front of the cameras and the trail of bimbos stop surfacing....
That aside, I think a lot of the Tour sponsor contracts are up in 2010 so it could have some effect. Sponsors are already under the gun with the economy. Most television contracts have "disaster" clauses in them and I wonder if this qualifies...
I'll still be watching, too, but I wonder, Shade, if you have a satellite dish or cable running to that van of yours?....
He's doing what is necessary to save his marriage. If he tried to play with a possible (probable?) divorce hanging over his head, he could implode. And that could prove disastrous for the tour, golf and him.
- The divorce is looking more probable than not, if that question is resolved then he can come back sooner. It's bad for his image if his wife considers him incorrigible, if they get divorced it makes it harder for him to claim he has been "reformed". But if they do split, he doesn't have to agonize about "saving the marriage"
- Needs to get off the drugs, if he is addicted to the painkillers then needs treatment, if he is not addicted, then he still should not be playing if he can't play without drugs
- There is more dirty laundry out there to be aired, only Tiger really knows the full extent of what he has done. The first of several Tiger-themed porn movies will apparently come out in February, stuff like that will continue to embarrass him
Logical times for him to come back might be either the Arnold Palmer Invitational (if he intends to play the Masters) or, more likely, the Memorial Tournament. The narrative of that could be: Tiger has been a very bad boy but the golfing elders have forgiven him and sanction his return.
It doesn't make much sense for him to casually drop in at a major tournament, he would more likely play something else before the major. Whatever he chooses for his "comeback", it will generate huge TV ratings but detract somewhat from the event itself because of the media circus and the ridicule that he will receive.
hey yes you are absolutely right. the game should be given more priority than the player.i appreciate your thinking. but as for as the concern of returning Tiger woods i think he will of course come back again because he is pretty determine to his game. i liked reading your views if you do have any kind of such views and you want to share it with others then please tell me on Golf Holiday in Spain
I think people are human, Yeah jumping in bed with a bunch of swamp donkey's instead of your wife wouldn't be a wise decision. But who knows how his marriage is. Who knows what goes on beyond the greens and in the life of a person who cannot breath outside of his own house. Yeah the spotlight brings a certain responsibility but there is no reason to hound the guy. I cheered for him because of how he played the game and will do the same when he comes back, Just like any other golfer doing good on the TV screen. I say he comes back for the Masters at least, out of respect for the game and his fans.
As much as I've been a fan of Tiger's abilities on a golf course, I am so over being a fan of Tiger. We all excused the temper tantrums on the course and the occasional bouts of boorish behavior because, well, he was Tiger and Tiger was special. Now, he's proven he's just another spoiled, overpaid athlete preying upon the adulation of the masses. Me thinks the Emperor needs new clothes...
As far as his returning to golf, when he does, he does. Meanwhile, the media will continue to generate headlines and ratings with endless speculation. Wake me up when he's on the first tee...
