Rumour.......

I've heard a rumour from a few friends of mine that if Ernie or Vijay finish the PGA ahead of Tiger, no matter how far ahead, they will overtake him on the world ranking list.

can anyone clarify if this is true or not?

thanks!

Not true. Vijay would have to win and Tiger miss the cut for Vijay to take over #1 and Ernie would have to win and Tiger finish outside the top 13 or 14 I believe for Ernie to become #1.

Stl is exactly right. Tiger would have to finish outside of the Top 10 AND Ernie would have to WIN for Tiger to drop to #2. Vijay's only chance is if Tiger misses the cut AND he wins. However, I have a feeling that neither scenario is going to play out because Tiger is going to win. His swing has been getting better and better over the last few events and I think it is solid enough to hold up and provide the win. Also, the length of the course is a factor as well...a course that long will result in a decrease in the field average for GIR and Tiger's short game gives him an advantage (let's face it, he's been practicing missing greens all year). If not for Tiger's short game, he would have dropped off the WGR #1 ranking a couple months ago. I'd like to see either Ernie or Phil (mathematically impossible THIS week) as #1 but I just don't see Tiger giving it up just yet.

Actually I am wrong. Here's an article that explains it better. Apparently, an Els win and Tiger in a 3-way tie for second or a second place and Tiger worse than 16th will get it done. Vijay is the same as I described.

Kind of funny...I did the same thing here as I did the other day elsewhere. I forgot to include Els' points from The International in my calculation.

I didn't even know Ernie played in The International probably because he didn't do so well by his standards. It looks like he's closer to the #1 spot now than before the U.S. Open and British Open where I don't think he had a chance at the top spot if Tiger placed in the top 10 or even a bit lower.

am i the only person that wants to see tiger keep his #1 spot for as long as he possibly can? i think its great to see his swing getting progressively better and better, and hope he can hold on to his no.1 spot for at least a few years to come!

I totally agree, Gaz. I don't believe all these people who can't wait for Tiger to give up his #1 spot. I can't be more excited for him to keep it! Not only that, but I am looking forward to seeing just how long he can keep it up, and how high he can raise the bar for Ernie and Vijay to reach.

I don't strongly like or dislike any of the PGA Tour pro's, but I do like history, and I think that Tiger has more history-making potential than anyone out there right now. So, because I want to see history being made, I'd like to see Tiger realize his full potential. At my age (I'm a quinquagenerian), I don't expect anyone with his potential to come along again in my lifetime.

For you youngsters, that means he is over 30. Don't trust anybody over 30.

one word stands out in your post there Jim, potential.

tiger has by no means realised his full potential, and i would love to see him do it, as you said.

i dont know if he will show the same commitment as he did though, due to his engagement to the beautiful....( ) Elin Nordegren. Family life, and the attraction of kids may get in the way.
