there is no tv channel over here that i receive broadcasting the PGA, although my grandmother has SKY TV, which broadcasts it, might watch some of it at her house.

Im very glad to see big Darren do well, he's one of my favourite golfers, and i hope he can win his first major!

Very surprised at Mr. Eldrick though! +3?? can anyone see him getting back into it?

Yes, Tiger shooting +3 is pretty surprising. Even more surprising might be David Duval at 1 under after 7 holes. I hope he can keep it up and have a decent showing with at least a made cut.

what kind of odds could you have gotten on duval shooting a better score than tiger in round 1? i'm not a huge duval fan, but i'd like to see him shoot a good round and hopefully get his game back on track.....

I wouldnt have bet money on it but I'd like to see Duval make the cut also.

Kind of surprised at John Daly's play though.

I think the most important factors in determining how tough a course might play (in regular conditions...ie. no 6" rough or 22 yard wide fairways) are firmness of the greens, pin locations and tees.

For Thursday's first round Whistling Straits played just about as easy as it can. The greens were quite accessible; many of the pin positions were quite easy to get at, and several of the toughest holes were played from the forward tees.

I still believe, in the right playing conditions, even without winds, this course just may be the toughest course these guys have ever played.

My first views of WS were from visiting their website. The angles that were used in the pictures make the bunkers more intimidating then they really are. After watching the views from the blimp on TV, most of those bunkers are far enough off most fairways to not be in play for most of the players. (the bunker on the right side of #9 fairway is a good example - I'd even think I would be able to avoid hitting my shots in there). Also, if you had to pick a type of rough that is easiest to hit out of, it would be fescue. I know Woods had trouble on 11 on Thurs, but generally speaking, the rough, while long, is whispy in nature. For the weekend, I expect the PGA to tuck more pins and move the tees back. With any kind of wind, then the scores are likely to be around par.

I also think the PGA was concerned that by moving the tees back from day one and using more difficult hole locations, that they would have 6 hour rounds and would never hear the end of complaints. They wanted it to play easier, but this was too easy, if there is such a thing! I would say 8 to 10 under might still win this - a far cry from what was expected.

I was amazed by the Lefty's shotmaking yesterday.... He had some awful drives and was able to really make some magic happen.

I saw the post round interview with Tiger last night and is it me or was he complaining that the tees were moved up on a few holes? He said the holes the tees were moved up on weren't the holes he expected, therefore, the course he played wasn't the course he practiced on and he didn't think the PGA would do that. I guess that's what +3 and 10 strokes behind will do to you. After all the hype from the players and the media on how hard Whistling Straits was going to be, the scores are a surprise to me. I don't think the PGA will let that continue. I know there was very little wind and they are the best players in the world, but the PGA Championship should not be the Buick Open. I'll bet the PGA finds a way to guarantee the scores on the weekend are considerably higher.

It wasn't you, Tiger was definitely using the moved up tees as an excuse for his lousy score. And yes, he virtually said that the PGA had tricked the players by giving them a set-up in the first round that they weren't expecting. It's the first time I ever heard a player complain that the course was easier or shorter than he thought it would be. It was pretty sad to watch. He has clearly run out of nothing to say about his poor performance.

That's the new and improved Butchless Tiger. :roflmao:

Unfortunately the scores they are shooting today are starting to look like yesterday's with 31 players under par so far. With 13 of them 2 under or better. :(
Only good thing to that is Mike Weir is one of them at -3 for the day.

Nantz's Hair?

I usually don't notice this kind of thing, but did anyone else see Jim Nantz's hair last night toward the end of the broadcast when he and Lanny were going over the events of the day? Is he going bald, or what? And the hair behind his headset was doing some really awful rooster comb kind of action that makes my morning hair look pretty darn good.

I think Jimmy is losing his hair--and fast. Can a pretty face survive on TV without hair?

I noticed the same thing! Not that I usually notice men's hair mind you I've always thot Nantz hits the right tone in his role and seems like a nice guy - it isn't as important for a man to look 'pretty' as it would be a woman to be on the tube. You rarely, if ever, see an unattractive woman in any role, sports or otherwise, on the screen. Lots of ugly looking guys tho - even I'm easy enough to look at to be in the booth compared to what I've seen!

Well, at least we've established that his hair was so bad that two manly men noticed!

Nantz does have a pleasant voice and relaxed style that doesn't set your teeth on edge, and he does have a good knowledge of the game that prevents him from saying blatantly stupid things. About unattractive women? That one babe on TGC is really hard to look at. Even makeup and hair doesn't help that much. She does have a nice personality, though. ;)
