If you review the thread "USGA is a Joke" started by greenguy you might gain some insight into how the courses are set up. Keep in mind that thread was started during the US Open at Shinnecock Hills and all the controversy that ensued. Greenguy is a golf course superintendent and has been extremely helpful in answering our golf course questions.

Go to the forums home page....click on the Tour Talk section...go to the bottom of the page where the page numbers are listed and click page 4. That should get you to the post USGA is a Joke. There are other posts on Tour Talk that also discuss course set up. I hope this helps. Good Luck and good reading.

In addition to leaguegolf's method, you could also use the search option located in the navigation bar. I searched for "usga is a joke" and found the thread so I'll just post the link for anyone interested:

I would say they do all of the things you mention. Pros will surely play from the tips, pin placements can be only a few paces off of the fringe, rough will be grown thicker, etc. The greens pros putt on are also usually faster than the ones we play on.

Thanks for the help Victory+! I couldn't recall the name of the thread so I had to find it the hard way. Here at the Buick Open the pros don't always play from the tips (especially on the Par 3's). Course and weather conditions dictate which tee placements they use.... .but I don't recall seeing Tour players hitting from the Red markers
