* 1997 Masters - Tiger's domination. As others have posted, this was incredible to watch.
* Tiger vs. Els at the Mercedes Championship, somewhere around 2001-2002 or so. It went to a playoff with some of the most incredible shotmaking I've ever seen. Tiger wins with a LONG putt. Incredible!
* Greg Norman and NIck Faldo at the Masters (don't recall the year) when Norman choked on the last day. I recall being AMAZED at Norman's shotmaking the entire week, except for Sunday, when Faldo came back for a heartbreaking loss for Norman.
Here's some others that come to mind:
* Tiger vs. Scott at the US Amateur, 1997 (I think). Tiger (of course) comes back from behind to win the match and the title. Poor Scott - I think he's struggling on the Canadian tour right now. I can remember Scott's cutie girlfriend/fiancee/caddie (he's married to her now) - Rowwwrrr!!!
Those are all I can think of right now, I'm sure there are plenty more!
SamT...great post...that Mercedes Championship was unbelievable...Tiger and Ernie both making eagle on 18 in regulation, and then matching birdies there in the playoff, before Tiger's bomb on #1.
And...Steve Scott's girlfriend was perfect... cute girl, always smiling...NBC(?) gave her lots of air time!!
Well I only got one I can really think is that great sience iv only been playing four years. And I saw it on a replay because it was in 1987 and I was bourne 2 yrs later but anyways.
It was the 1987 US Open (I think)- Seve ballestaros, his shot landed IN a tree 97 yards from the from the hole. He took his wedge hit it out of the tree, hit it into the bunker, hit a rock, bounced out, hit the green, rolled into the cup. That was the best and most AMAZING thing I ever seen in my life.
For some reason, one thing that sticks in my mind is this one shot, I'm not sure of the year or event, but I think it was last year or the year before...anyway Tiger had a bunker shot, fairway bunker, pulled out a 3-iron and put in on the green. It was just such a miraculous shot. Other than that, I would just pick the same as what people have already said...President's Cup last year and I guess...The Masters this year. I am sooo disappointed Ernie couldn't have won that, but at the time I was excited for Phil.
On a side note, for some reason, I always like to see who wins the Masters. I always watch that tournament and I'm so proud of the winner. Especially if it's a first-time major winner. But then, I just have to sit back and look at everything over the next couple months. I get sick of all the advertising and the new brands. "Weir Golf"?! "What will Phil do next?"?! I don't care! I'm sad to say, I really don't like Mike Weir or Phil Mickelson at all anymore. [/random paragraph]
1. Jack almost holes a 1-Iron on 17 at Pebble - 72 US Open.
2. The Duel in the Sun - Turnbury, 77 Open.
3. Payne drains the putt to win at Pinehurst - 99 US Open
4. Johnny Miller nails a 63 at Oakmont - 73 US Open
I have to put this in as the best display of sportsmanship - Jack concedes putt to Jacklin in Ryder Cup. The US had already won, Tony didn't have the chance to miss a shortish putt as well.
There are many others that I could go through, some of the players that I've seen - Player, Snead (Slammer), Seve, Faldo, Tiger...
No, the concession made the match a tie ,which is why Sam Snead was not a happy man.
You're ri, righ, righ........ Man, I almost said it didn't I!
The Ryder Cup matches were halved in 1969 (at Royal Birkdale) when Jack conceded Tony's 2 footer for a halve. Jack's comment to Tony after picking up Tony's marker was "I don't think you would've missed that putt, but in these circumstances I would never give you the opportunity."
The 40+ footer the Justin Leonard made for the Ryder Cup
another Ryder Cup highlight when Bernard Langer yipped his put on 18. I think it was that same day when Mark Calchevicia (sp?) yanked his tee shot straight left into the water on the par 3 17th. Looked like one of us. Not too much pressure there...
Top 3...thats tough to narrow to top 3. Since I'm a Nicklaus and Woods fan...I'll give my top 3 for each which is tough enough.
Nicklaus
1) '86 Masters...what more needs to be said here that hasn't been said. Had me in tears as did Ken Venturi, Pat Summerall(as he found out he was down to his last beer) and many others.
2) '80 US Open...not to the magnitude of the '86 Masters, but had everyone thinking including me...where did that come from? Like many, I personally thought he was washed up.
3A) '77 Turnberry...Had me in tears for the wrong reason . But still has to go down as the best dual in Major's history.
3B) '75 Masters...my first vivid recollection of Jack at the Masters. I was merely a young lad of ten at the time and it made a big impresion on me. I had seen him in person for the first time, two weeks earlier winning at the Heritage and was intently glued to the set watching the '75 classic unfold with Weiskoph and Miller. Never will forget Jack's reaction after holing the snake on 16. As Miller later claimed, he left "bear tracks".
Woods
1) '01 Masters...just being their watching the classic unfold was special.
2) '00 PGA...**** dual with May. Showed just how clutch Tiger is.
3A) '97 Masters...first time seeing him in person. Not much in drama on Sunday, but the historical significance can't be dismissed.
3B) '00 US Open...the definition of dominance. Doubt we'll ever see something like this in our lifetimes.
