Roger Cleveland does the wedges for Callaway. Phil may even develop his own line or irons under Hogan as well. But Callaway seems more likely. As far as putters, Bettinardi may be in running since he does the Hogan putters, which Vijay played last week. I can't see Phil trading designs over his Scotty Cameraon Napa. We shall see.
I agree that his wedges won't be a problem. I would think he could go to the Hogan Apex pretty easily but then he won't really be Callaway. Kind of like a Cobra player is not a Titleist player although they are owned by the same company. I look for Callaway to design a "Mickelson" line of wedges and maybe even a set of some kind of blade or hybrid for him...but I guess we will just have to wait and see. By the time I see him or his caddy again to ask, he will already be playing the new stuff (next year at The Masters).
This is big news, I have honestly never seen Mickelson play other than clips and things, but he looks really good, and he's my idol since he's a lefty.
I don't think he should have to play *all* Callaway stuff, Callaway doesn't make the greatest putters or wedges or even irons from what I have seen. However I do like their GBBs and ERCs from when I've seen them being hit. Also their HX tour ball is supposed to be really solid. However I just use cheap yellow Pinnacle balls, I can't even tell the difference.
But I did find a Pro V1X the other day in the woods, brand new, so that was my excitement for the day... I lost it 5 minutes later.
Most of the top players have it in their endorsement contracts that they only have to play x amount of that company's clubs. Almost none of the players sign a contract requiring them to play a certain brand of driver or putter.
Phil is +9 after 13 holes today and in dead last place at the Canadian Open. I hope that this isn't an indication of what Callaway is going to do for him, and what he's going to do for us in the Ryder Cup!
What is kind of funny is other than some woods, the bulk of the Callaway equipment is not even in his bag yet.
I believe he is keeping the irons and the putter but his driver, woods and I've heard, wedges are all Callaway. What may make the largest difference, though, is not the clubs but the ball. Hopefully, he'll get it together for the Ryder Cup.
