Now that VJ Singh is the undisputed #1 ranked player in the world, how long will he keep his #1 spot?
Tiger Woods' and Greg Norman's length of time being #1 are out of range for VJ, but I think it's safe to say he'll be #1 longer than Tom Lehman was (1 week). My guess is that he'll be replaced by the 2005 Masters. Who replaces him will depend on who wants it the most. The King is dead....long live the King!
My wish is one week, but it can't happen. He'll keep it through the rest of this year as he plays so much and the guys chasing him won't be so maybe early next year is the first chance to catch him. Of course, if they implement the new "best 50" system he will be stuck at the top for a long while.
I think Vijay will stay #1 for quite a while. The World Golf Ranking takes into account the last two years and for Vijay, the last two years have been amazing. By next year's Masters, I think all of Vijay's wins will still count towards his rankings. Then you look at Tiger's 5 wins from last year (2003) being dropped from the ranking and Vijay might have a pretty big lead over Tiger.
It does look like Tiger is coming into form, though. He hasn't been able to get the wins but it seems like he places in the top 10 almost everytime out. I actually think Ernie or Phil have a better chance of overtaking Vijay than Tiger does, though.
I reckon that cus Vijay is number 1 his play will get worse because he is worried about losing his ranking-look what happened to David Duval, i saw on he is 631st in ranking. It stinks here because the golf starts at 8 in the morning and i have to go to school
I would tend to agree with victory that VJ will hold it for a while. He plays the game better than anyone at this very moment and should be rewarded for it with thte No.1 ranking!! Congrats VJ
A lot of the discussion on GolfRewind, as well as on TV, hints that since Tiger's run is over, his career is over. Yes, it is shocking that he is no longer # 1, but I will "rewind" to 1973. I know golf rankings were not kept back then, but in '73, Johnny Miller had a sensational season, winning 8 times. He probably knocked Jack Nicklaus off his mantle for a short period of time. The thing to remember is that Miller did not stay on top for very long, and Nicklaus came back strong in '74.
Tiger seems very resourceful to me. Something tells me that he will find a way to get back on top, and who knows, maybe another five year run at # 1. It certainly can happen. Let's not write him off just yet.
The thing that seems daft is that it has taken tiger to play really badly (for him) for him to be knocked off, at the same time, the competition has caught up with truly spectacular play.... fair Tiger my never get back as good as he once was, but even were he to play moderately well in his terms, it will be hard to keep him from getting #1 back.....
I'm a firm believer in hard work being the #1 contributor to success (with a little luck thrown in of course). From everything I read, Vijay is the "hardest working" pro on tour. He may not dig ditches all day, nor have to put up with bureaucratic nonsense all day, but he logs hours and hours on the practice tee keeping his swing in groove. So from that standpoint, I think he deserves the #1 spot. I don't think anyone deserves to be #1 for 5+ years, but that is the way the process works. I'd like to see a number of golfers roll in and out of the #1 spot - Vijay, Phil, Ernie, even Tiger, and others.
Tiger has been on a pretty good run lately, unfortunately he "set the bar" so high a few years ago it may be unrealistic to think he will ever match those accomplishments again.
I'm not a Tiger Woods fan, but over the past few years he's forced a lot of pro's to become better golfers, except himself.

It's about "earned" not "deserved." Because you work the hardest doesn't mean you deserve anything. (Just ask my wife ) You still have to perform to earn your way to the top. Tiger "earned" his 5+ years by far outperforming everyone, and now VJ has caught and passed him. VJ has earned his #1 ranking by his performance on the course, not because he deserves it.

Mea culpa - "Vijay deserves everything he has earned." Happy now?
When I see someone at work really apply themselves to a project, put in the necessary hours, and finally succeed, I think to myself "he/she really "deserves" all of the rewards and accolades that come with it. I've also seen people "stumble and bumble" into a success they neither earned nor deserved.
Hard for me to believe Tiger "earned" his #1 ranking during this past year. From my vantage it seemed like he was living off of what he "earned" during the previous years.
I'm always happy GenErr! If the rankings were based on just this last year Tiger certainly would've lost the #1 spot long ago. The rankings are based on a longer period of time and it has just taken VJ's outstanding performance, in the last year, this long to catch and pass Tiger. Player of the Year honors are for one year's performance. #1 in the World Rankings is a much more complicated formula. You are right, Tiger had "banked" points based on last year's performance.
14and18, I definitely think Tiger will reattain the #1 ranking some day. He's still a young guy and has many years ahead of him. Even in his "slump," he has been playing pretty well. I think he finished 2nd at the NEC and now, T2 at the Deutsche Bank. Those are great results for someone that isn't even at the top of his game. For now, Vijay is playing the best and is well deserving of that #1 ranking. I'm just looking forward to more battles like this where two top players battle it out in the final group.
