I show my age, but I remember as a kid reading about the professional golfers wanting to win tournaments. Heck they had to win in order to make any money. I didn't read about guys trying to finish in the top 10 - all that got them was back working at the range or selling sweaters in the pro shop.
Nowadays with all the money available, players take pride in finishing in the Top 10, heck they strive to be in the Top 125 money winner list for the year to be exempt for the following year.
We send the top 10 + captain's picks to the Ryder Cup. I'm not sure the US sends the "hungriest" golfers.
