He should have realized that he would be drained from the Ryder Cup... i mean, he had played this very intense, pressure-packed event three times before, and knew not only that he was going to play five matches, but also that he was going to Ireland the week after the 84 Lumber Classic. I feel badly for the people who purchased tickets specifically to see Tiger. It's like a bait and switch.
On the other hand, I hope that Tiger decides to play more events in 2005, including some of the lesser known events. It will make the Tour more exciting week to week, and give us a chance to see more Tiger/Vijay battles. I think Tiger relishes that opportunity.
I really think Tiger will play more events next year. He won't play as many as Vijay but I think he'll play in more. His committment to this event may be a sign of this even though he decommitted later. One event I hope he's at is the Sony Open. He'll already be in Maui on the week before for the Mercedes Championship so why not play the Sony on Oahu the next week? I know last year, the CEO of Sony offered up his fairway home at Waialae to get Tiger to come but he refused the offer.
Often times, when Tiger commits to an event but can't play he will go back another year and play. He did it in Dubai since he backed out with the war last year. I suspect he will play at Nemacolin Woodlands next year. I think he will play more in general too. I think with his injury two years ago, the recovery last year, and his father's illness and impending marriage this year he probably didn't feel like playing all that much. Next year most of those issues should be out of the way and we could see a fresh and focused Tiger next year.
