Vijay withdraws from WGC

Vijay just withdrew from the WGC in Ireland.

Quote:
Sept. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Vijay Singh, who has won five of the past six golf tournaments he's entered, withdrew from this week's American Express Championship in Ireland after Hurricane Jeanne damaged his Florida home over the weekend.

``Vijay felt now was a time to spend with his family,'' tournament spokesman Roddy Williams said in a statement.

The hurricane, now downgraded to a tropical storm, knocked out power and caused water damage to Singh's home in Ponte Vedra Beach.

I saw that earlier and was gonna post it, but I posted it elsewhere and forgot about here. Anyway, hopefully Vijay's family and home are all right and he can get things squared away so he can return focused. On the bright side for the other 68 golfers in the field now have an actual chance to win the event

That is a bit of a shame I do hope his family are ok.

Perhaps a harsh suggestion, but I wonder if Vijay is worried about not winning? Having become rather dominant over the last while, there may be a tendency to do some picking and choosing of tournaments and fields in order that he makes it easy to continue....

Don't most of the big boys take the week following a "Major" off? What's that? The 84 Lumber Classic isn't a Major? No way! You're telling me that with that field it's not being considered another Major? They sure fooled VJ!

That's too bad. I was wondering how he would do against the field. That is, can he win four in a row? It would have been interesting.

Plus, Vijay won't get the benefit of the free flight to Ireland, courtesy of the 84 Lumber CEO.

I don't believe this, I'm going to the American Express Championship for the weekend, and I was looking forward to seeing Vijay so much!! I suppose in the end, he still has a family to support, and he has a reason to be with them.

Doesn't mean im not a little bit angry at this though!!!

How about some insider info from on site? We, in the States, will have early morning TV coverage (time difference and all) but it's always interesting to read member's first hand experiences. Why not start your own thread and keep us informed?

will do league, had planned to do that anyway.

I got lucky too, I booked about a year and a half ago, so i managed to get staying in the Mount Juliet Hotel for the weekend too, going down on friday morning, staying right through till sunday after the golf.

i'll keep everyone posted when i get back home, as Mount Juliet is about a 4 hour drive from where I live, so im not making the journey everyday!

4 hour drive? That's only 8 hours round trip. I know you can do it.

Anyway, have a good time over at the Amex. I'll be sitting at home watching it on television, waiting for you to post your report.
