also, I remember a site that showed world rankings based on head-to-head play vs the entire field instead of the point system. Does anyone have that URL?
I don't believe Player of the Year point standings exist. After the Tour Championship, all of the players are given a ballot and the players vote for the Player of the Year. The results are announced about a month after. It's not like it matters this year. Vijay's a lock to win it.
yip, victory's right, there is no POY point standings, the pros themselves vote on this after the Tour Championship
that's not not true, I saw a PGA.com news article with standings at the time, where:
1 PGA win = 10 points
1st major = 30 points
20 points for 1st place in money, 18 pts for 2nd place, 16 for 3rd...
20 points for 1st place in scoring, 18 pts for 2nd place, 16 for 3rd...
50 bonus points for winning 2nd major
25 bonus points for winning 3rd & 4th major
I think the confusion is over which POY you are discussing! There are two - the one done by the PGA which is based on the point system and the other that is voted on by the players themselves.
Nobody paid much attention until last year since usually the same player wins both. However, since Tiger had the PGA (points one) wrapped up, there was a lot of discussion about the voting one since that is more subjective and some people felt Vijay's overall year was better even though he had earned less points on the PGA system.
I was asked to post a link somewhat explaining what is going on. As for the points, what is posted above is exactly correct. Here is a link to the PGA site about the awards but they have not released a new standing since VJ has mathematically made it impossible for anyone to catch him even if that person won EVERY event left.
Thank you for clearing that up for us! I, like a few others, wasn't aware that there are two POY awards. VJ won't have to worry about his popularity this time around.
Nope, there is no way the players can justify NOT voting for VJ this year. There have only been two years where the PGA of America winner did not also win the PGA Tour vote. The way the awards go, I put more weight on the PGA of America POY than any other because it is OBJECTIVE.
Here is my rundown of the EOY Awards for 2004:
VJ is a lock for ALL of the POY Awards (PGA of America, PGA Tour (Nicklaus Award) AND Golf Writers).
VJ will win the Arnold Palmer Award.
VJ should win the Byron Nelson Award (Golf Digest).
Tiger will win the McCormack Award
The Vardon trophy is not a lock yet but VJ is in the driver's seat.
Of all of the awards, probably the least important would be the Arnold Palmer Award as simply playing in all of the events and making cuts could win this one.
