For as long as I can remember Judy Rankin has been doing on-course commentary for (I believe?) ABC Sports. And for as long as I can remember I have hated hearing that low croggy voice. So much so that I'll usually change the channel once I start to hear it.
Who's with me? Who can't stand this lady?
I think I'll start a petetion to get her fired.

IMO, Judy is one of the better TV commentators. She doesn't find it necessary to be cute or push her own "agenda", she just give short, concise reports of what is actually happening and then closes her mouth. Also, and probably equally important, the players seem to like her and trust her.
She's the most insightful, concise, intelligent course commentator on TV. She's also very good in the tower when given that opportunity. She should have replaced Curtis Strange, IMO.
I'd love to see Rankin in the booth but I don't think she fits the "color commentator" personality. She is too objective in her reporting of the situations and doesn't use enough McCordisms. Also, nobody cares if she says "That is not the shot I would have played" ala Miller or Strange because she has NEVER faced the type of shots the PGA Tour players have to hit. I also think she is so good because she LOVES what she does. Gets to get out and watch some live golf, walk around in the fresh air, play practice rounds on the nicest courses in the world, AND get paid regardless of how she plays...what could be better?
In my opinion, Judy Rankin is a graceful and classy lady who also possesses a great knowledge of the game of golf. She is everything a great commentator should be. She never tries to show anyone up, or inject herself front and center.
Judy does her homework and delivers exactly what the listening audience needs: information. She doesn't try to be more than what she is. She doesn't overreach. Simply, Judy Rankin is one of the best, and I would hate to see her go.

So true, IMO. She simply stands and delivers, time after time, on cue.
You know, I didn't pay much attention to Judy when I first started watching broadcasts that she was on. I didn't pay attention to her largely because she didn't call attention to herself. She just gave me the info I wanted, quickly and succinctly. Then, after a while, I began noticing how reliable she was. That's when I started to get impressed.

I don't care, and I don't think very many other people do either, when Miller or Strange or any other former player says, "That is not the shot I would have played." If he could play the right shot or had played the right shot, he wouldn't be sitting in the booth commenting; he'd be playing. Point out the options, yes. Inject his game, or one-time game, into the comment, no.
I respect the careers of those men, but their games no longer matter: Today's game and today's players do. Why not just say, "Most professional golfers would not play that shot in this situation for the following reasons"? The objectivity that Rankin employs should be emulated by more "color" commentators.

I'm with you on this one 100%. I think Rankin is the BEST commentator out there. She is clear, concise and to the point. I'd love to see her in the booth and get the guys still trying to draw attention to their decades old accomplishments out of the booth.
