So the first question is, does anyone think she can make the cut? She missed by 1 stroke last year but it's entirely possible she doesn't do as well. What she did last year was play about 30 rounds at Waialae Country Club before the Sony so she definitely got to know the course.
I'll be at the Sony Open this year so I'll be sure to bring back a bunch of pictures for all of you. The Gallery has been devoid of pictures from professional tournaments to this point so I better take matters into my own hand. I might also make it to the Grand Slam of Golf at Poipu and the Mercedes Championship on Maui but I'm not sure yet. For all of you duck lovers, I think I've been granted exclusive rights to their pictures this year.
One more thing. Please don't turn this into a "can women compete on the Men's tour right now or in the future" discussion. I merely want to know what you all think of Michelle at the Sony and whether you think she will make the cut.
Michelle has to make some putts to make the cut. At the recent LPGA tourney, she wasn't making putts, but on the second day, she was right there with Annika until it came time to go to the flat stick. I think she gets nervous and overthinks her putts. You can see it in her face. She's not in THE ZONE, she's scared half the time. She won't make the cut.
Depends on how much she matures mentally between now and the Sony. She will eventually make the cut in a men's tournament. The Sony is the best bet since she can play the course more then the other guys.
I agree with the above. Familiarity with the course will allow her to compete better than she normally would. This year though, I don't expect her to do quite as well. There's gonna be even more media pressure after what she did last year and I think that will get to her.
True stlcard, she might buckle. She has done so at majors when things got tough. Not often, but this is with the men, not the women. Only time will tell...
I just don't see anything that could make it easier on her this time around. Maybe if Vijay has a streak of wins going in there or something, but I'm not sure if he normally plays the Sony. That event is going to be hurt by the fact that the Buick Invitational is going to be played the week after it this year.
Yup. I think the only thing that could make it easier for her is if she is a better player since last year. But I don't think she really improved much, except for being more mature.
Maturity can be a very decisive factor in her performance. Face it, she has been playing against the top names in the game since she was 13. Even at 15 now, she is still just a child, can you imagine the emotions that must go through her head. Not to mention all the media hype. I admire her tenacity, and consider all of us lucky to see what is perhaps the future best female golfer in the world. This is provided she doesn't burnout early.
I think that Michelle is women's best hope for competing against men, but not just yet... I think she'll miss the cut again. But heck, she's 15 and female. I think that some day she'll make a cut on the PGA Tour.
I agree with golfgeek. She'll take a run at the number but won't make the cut like she did last year. But I do see a deffinate possibility to her playing in this event for awhile, or at least untill she's 18.
The Sony is the perfect fit for Wie. Everything she could ask for is in her favor. She just has to play well. Regardless of what score she shoots, just the fact she's teeing it up on the PGA Tour says it all. After coming so close last year, anything short of making the cut will be seen as a setback by the casual golf fan.
If she plays well and makes the cut everybody sees it as a natural progression. If she plays poorly and finishes well back of the cut line, it will hurt her marketability and her image. It's good for golf, it's good for the Sony, and it's good for the fans. Will it be good for Wie? We'll see.
