I don't think that there should be a change. They have almost the same system as the Europeans..... I think that we should go back to the captians that actually won (if there still alive it has been soo long) and take it from there
Check the selection process for the two teams and you'll see there are more differences than you think.
As for the last "Captain that actually won"...that would be Arnold Palmer because he was the last playing Captain. No Captain since has hit a shot or sank a putt. The bottom line with being a Ryder Cup Captain is.....if your side plays well, you're a hero. If they stink up the place like the American team this time around, it doesn't matter one iota who the captain is. he's still going to lose.
If you believe (as I do) that the captain plays a minor role, what difference does it make who that captain is?
Well, to the extent that the captain shouldn't be distracted, possibly, by his own playing career, I think it may be better to have a guy who is over 50 and not playing regularly on TOUR.

I think there should be a change in the way the American team is selected, but I certainly am not in favor of the "hottest players" idea.
I mean, what are we going to do? Pick a guy like Brian Gay just because he's on a run of four or five consecutive top tens?
How would we define hot, anyway? Would a player have to have a victory in his hot streak? For how long would he have to be hot anyway?
I think the Ryder Cup team should be based on the Official World Golf Ranking. Take the top 10 American players and add two captain's choices. And the Captain's choices should be based more on their ability, or likelihood to inspire his team mates and the crowds.
