Paul Casey 'apologizes'

I saw the interview with Paul Casey where he apologized for basically calling Americans stupid.
He said his "quotes" were taken out of context on things he said off the cuff. While I berated him for saying such I can accept his apology.....not that he needed to apologize.
The news person that wrote that article should be taken out and, well, you get the idea.
This is how ill feelings start between peoples. Writers should be held to a higher standard and should be fired for writing such inflammatory dribble. Basically Casey was probablt set up by the writer to say things he wouldn't normally say in an interview.
Do I think Paul Casey still thinks Americans are "stupid". To an extent yes. But I also think he knows we are basically good people and are being taken advantage of in the media.............like he just was.
Maybe now some of the Europeans will start to question what they read about Americans now.

I agree with this, however you would think people would be more leery of the media. Look at all the times that people make a remark and the media spins it for them. This happens on both sides of the pond.

Take John Rocker for example. Same thing happened to him...........but he was never given a break after that from the media because of which side of the political spectrum he was on.
I know about the media. Been quoted before. It's hard to be honest and be 'smart with your words' also.

The paper that published his initial remarks was The Daily Mirror, a tabloid with rather sensationalist leanings, only a cut above the National Enquirer type papers.

I will also controversially add that ideas similar to what Casey said are held very commonly outside of the US - in this country I've not yet met one person who understands how Bush was re-elected in a record turnout. I will also add that I do not hold Casey's views and recognise a certain naivete about what he said. To be fair to him, he's lived in the States quite some time and can well speak from his own experience, but even that experience is limited in the context of a cast nation like America.

No it's easy to be honest, it's the media that is dishonest. Anything to "create" a story.

Good point but...."Honest" and "smart with your words" rarely sells newspapers and magazines these days. Especially when one story has to be more sensational than the last.

Casey didn't just fall off of the turnip truck. I haven't followed this closely, but I presume that Casey was quoted correctly and he was aware that he was speaking to a reporter. Sensationalism sells, especially in the UK from what I've heard. Just good old fashioned capitalism at work. It wouldn't exists if there wasn't an eager audience for it. I wouldn't be so quick to "kill the messenger", blame the dummies who lap it up.

Casey was originally interviewed in the Sunday Times. In the article he said that the atmosphere in the head to head Ryder Cup matches was such that you 'hated ' your opponents, which if you see the intensity of any top sportsman at the height of performance, is a normal reaction. On the field of play you give your all to beat the opponent, and after the game you share a beer.
The Daily Mirror, Britain's equivalent of the National Enquiror, is a newspaper for the discerning trailer trash , and took Casey's comments completly out of context.Casey was explaining how Europeans feel undervalued by American golf - witness the suggestion that the Nationwide Tour is the second best Tour - and the Ryder Cup was the perfect way to put the Americans in their place.Casey lives in USA , has an American girlfriend and went to college in USA,so he must like more about USA thanmost.

The suggestion that the Nationwide Tour was the second best tour was just that-suggestion. If you look at the poll, it was 20-3 in favor of the European Tour.

But I can forgive Casey, the press always blows everything way out of proportion. He made a heat of the moment slip of tongue and it was taken out of context. Far worse things have been said.

the suggestion that the Nationwide Tour was the second best was made by an American tour player originally, that was part of what prompted Casey's comments.

You're using John Rocker as an example? The guy was a racist idiot, given many opportunities to amend any misconceptions about his image. The dude just kept throwing gas on the fire.

Whether Casey pays US taxes or not is irrelevant. He's still intitled to his opinion. No, i don't like it........So, like I posted on the other Casey thread, his opinion carries no weight and I simply discount it.

Now that Monty has made nice with American golf fans, it looks like Casey had better prepare himself for the rude golf idiot's vocal distractions to convert over to him.

What Casey said was down right stupid. He went to Arizona State. You can get into ASU with a 3.0 or better. He didn't exactly go to school with geniuses. I understand Casey being mad that people don't value the European Tour here as much as the Nationwide Tour and I do agree that the Euro Tour is above and beyond better than the Nationwide Tour because of the number of low ranked players that play on it but you can't say anything on TV or to a reporter that may possibly bring down a group of people. Remember Ben Wright? Or anyone who ever said black people were just made to be better athletes? Anyone remember them being on TV agian? It's just somthing you don't talk about and Casey made a mistake calling the Americans stupid.

In today's Sunday Times , the guy who wrote the original article makes some valid points. Read and digest before criticising Casey.I suggest you find out what Casey actually said.

At no point did he call Americans stupid.

An interesting view of Americans from another Brit who loves USA
