...how times change! I noticed today that Monty is 100/1 to win next years European order of merit ...! For a man who`s done it so many times before is it worth a `nibble`? He looks a lean mean golfing machine at the moment and is full for praise for his new clubs. If V.J. can play so well at a similar age, is there any good reason why Monty can`t again ???
I think that if Colin gets of to a good start theres no reason he cant get back in the top ten. Im ot sure he can win... the conditions for winning the order of merit seem to have changed even since 1999. In pre 1999 conditions, Miguel Angel Jimenez would have won this years order of merit, but now you have Ernie and Retieff winnig Majors and WGC titles, those events alone can give you an insurmountable lead.
Monty could win 4 or 5 'regular events' but Ernie wins a major and another world match play and goodnight. That being said those are still tasty odds, if Monty could do well in a couple of Major/WGC events then who knows?
Really, the only two guys Colin would have to beat are Retief Goosen and Ernie Els. If they both have off years, perhaps Colin has a chance.
With Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey playing more and more on the PGA TOUR, Colin could win two events in Europe and finish no worse than third on the Order of Merit.
Is he going to play in a lot of tournaments this year. I mean VJ plays in almost every event. There's a big differnce between playing 75% of all tournaments and playing 25% of all tournaments.
I still have hopes for Colin winning a major. If he can just get his head screwed on right and ignore the gallery, he still has enough game to get the job done. He proved that at the Ryder Cup--again!
This year the Open is at St Andrews which sort of evens out the field. Plus the US open is at his favourite American course at Pinehurst so he may have a chance if he can find his best form.
