Shigeki Maruyama is one of the top players currently. I think he finished in the top 30 on the money list this year. Isao Ioki (spelling ?) was a top player, especially on the Senior tour for years, but he's a bit past his prime now. Jumbo Osaki had some success on tour and I think he's about ready for the senior tour ... I think he had a brother on tour also. I can't remember his name. There was also another guy, who wore a funky sort of psuedo cowboy hat who's had some success... his name escapes me, too. I'm sure there have been others.

Shigeki Maruyama had four wins in three years if you count the World cup and performed well in the 02 majors.

Theres also Hidemichi Tanaka, who partnerd Maruyama at this years world cup and has his own personal fan club based in New York, look out for them at the BC open the cameras always find them.

Other than that I dont know many, I wish one of the major sports channels would shows some more Japanese events.

Toshii Izawa and Shingo Katayama are other Japanese players I've spotted on tour in recent years, and I'm sure there are more around...

Shingo Katayama , yea card, he's the guy with the odd hat and always a smile on his face. A real croud-pleaser. I haven't seen much of him lately. He was in the mix in a couple of tournaments a few years back.

Here is a list of the top 30 ranked Japanese golfers, according to the Official World Golf Ranking. The golfers' world rank is in parentheses.

1 Shigeki Maruyama, Jpn (28)
2 Shingo Katayama, Jpn (54)
3 Toru Taniguchi, Jpn (62)
4 Toshimitsu Izawa, Jpn (83)
5 Tetsuji Hiratsuka, Jpn (121)
6 Keiichiro Fukabori, Jpn (129)
7 Hideto Tanihara, Jpn (134)
8 Katsumasa Miyamoto, Jpn (141)
9 Tak'i Kamiyama, Jpn (143)
10 Ryoken Kawagishi, Jpn (150)
11 Hideki Kase, Jpn (151)
12 Hidemichi Tanaka, Jpn (158)
13 Hiroyuki Fujita, Jpn (164)
14 Taichi Teshima, Jpn (173)
15 Toru Suzuki, Jpn (185)
16 Tsuyoshi Yoneyama, Jpn (192)
17 Tomohiro Kondo, Jpn (196)
18 Katsumune Imai, Jpn (204)
19 Hidemasa Hoshino, Jpn (226)
20 Takuya Taniguchi, Jpn (228)
21 Tatsuya Mitsuhashi, Jpn (238)
22 Joe Ozaki, Jpn (243)
23 Daisuke Maruyama, Jpn (250)
24 Kiyoshi Murota, Jpn (252)
25 Kaname Yokoo, Jpn (255)
26 Yasuharu Imano, Jpn (260)
27 Makoto Inoue, Jpn (263)
28 Nobuhiro Masuda, Jpn (264)
29 Kiyoshi Maita, Jpn (269)
30 Hisayuki Sasaki, Jpn (275)

Shigeki is easily the most successful Japanese golfer in PGA TOUR history. He is the only one to win more than once on the PGA TOUR and has finished inside the top 40 on the TOUR's money list five consecutive seasons.

Toshi Izawa finished tied 4th at the 2001 Masters and, at that same year's PGA Championship, Shingo Katayama finished tied 4th. And, yes, Ryuji Imada is fully exempt on the 2005 TOUR, by virtue of his 3rd placing on the 2004 Nationwide TOUR money list.

I'd love to see some kind of contractual agreement reached that would allow The Golf Channel to show some Japan Golf Tour events.

Taniguchi had a fairly good year, it's surprising that Shingo is still ahead of him...I predict that will change this year. Maruyama is their leader, however...that guy really got game. Imada will be good, he gets hot sometime, but he had his share of struggles on the NW Tour.

I've seen some Japanese events...no club slammin' or cussin' there. And those cups...ding, ding, ding! I love it...makes the putt even more rewarding somehow.

As someone noted earlier, Japan has its own professional Tour. A lot of pros from Hawaii play in Japan. I do know that playing golf in Japan is extremely expensive. You usually have to belong to a club and getting a tee time at the very few public courses around are hard to come by.

Good research by Droogy. Looks to me like there are more and more Japanese players stepping up their game. Good to see.
