Fifth Major..?

Does anyone think The Players Championship will ever develop into the fifth major, as it always has such a strong field and Sawgrass looks more than worthy to host it. I hope it does

No, I do not believe we'll see The PLAYERS Championship being designated, officially, a major championship. And why should it be?

Is it not enough to have great regular TOUR events, played on great courses, with great fields?

Never going to happen. The powers that be in golf are all traditionalists and four is all we'll ever see. IMO That's all
we ever need!

I don't see a need for a 5th major to be added, it'll just cause problems with the major totals, etc on down the road. Would Jack's 3 TPCs count as majors or not? Would it be fair to the guys who never could play that event if it were counted? I like the 4 we have and the TPC remains the best "non-major event" on the schedule each year.

Why would we have a major tournament so early in the season (I think February or at the latest, March) and so close to the Masters? No, it wouldn't make sense to make The Player's Championship a major. I just think of it as a significant event, like the Bay Hill Invitational and the Bell Canadian Open (significant because I'm Canadian ).

I agree with stlcard. Adding another major will only mess up the system even more than it is. No sense in complicating things when its fine as it is.

It`s a good point that stlcard raises in that players who have already won The Players Championship would not have that win included in a majors tally. I remember watching The Masters one year when Jack Nicklaus corrected a commentator who talked about his 18 major titles, whereupon Jack swiftly corrected him to add his 2 U.S. amateur titles too. It`s interesting to see how things change...

Well I'd keep it at 4, include the Players and dump the Masters. But that's my own personal axe I won't grind here out of respect for all of you Masters lovers.

I would definately not like to see a fifth Major....

but if there was one id rather see it in Australia or South Africa etc.... as opposed to having another one in America. No offence, Sawgraas is a great course and its a great event but I feel i9t would be a little unfair.

I don't think there will be a 5th major. Otherwise, EVERY event with a strong field will petition for "major status." Majors are much more than strong fields and need to have tradition behind them. Many truly great shots have been struck in TOUR events and are each week but no one really remembers them like they do the shots to win majors. It IS interesting though that the TOUR does not have a major event of it's own...
