Just noticed from Jim's list that neither are in the field as of yet Oh well, I'll stick with them anyway.
My, oh my. Let's clear something up, here. The Mercedes Championships is the former Tournament Of Champions, meaning that only winners from the previous TOUR season are eligible to play. Unfortunately, Davis Love III did not win in 2004 and Phil announced, a few weeks ago, that he is skipping this event.
To win: Retief Goosen
To finish last: Heath Slocum
I think Jim has the right idea. Lately, and more especially since the Mercedes has moved to Kapalua, the winner has tended to be a highly ranked guy...a top player...and he has usually been on form recently.
Also, because of the massive elevation changes and rolling, tumbling fairways, first-time guys generally do not fare very well. More especially if he's a guy who usually is not consistently good in the first place.
Therefore, I'll echo Jim's winner....Retief Goosen...and I'll go with Bart Bryant as the cellar dweller.

With all the talk about The Big Three it was interesting to see that each one of those titans had a golden opportunity to win this tournament, but came away empty handed.
It just goes to show how tough it really is, especially under pressure. I thought Ernie really mis-calculated with his tee shot at #18. It appeared that he was aiming far right...and the commentators actually said as much.
Ernie was obviously attempting to hit a big, sweeping draw...hoping to catch the slope and produce a 400 yard drive. He was going for the eagle...the touchdown...the grand slammer in the bottom of the ninth. And all he needed was a birdie; something he likely would have achieved even with a controlled fade or even a 3-wood off the tee.
If Ernie is ever going to produce a six or seven-win season on the PGA TOUR...something the editors at Golf World think he may do this year...he'll need to take full advantage of all his golden opportunities.
