"I overheard the Nickent Golf Tour rep talk about their hybrid club. It's gained good acceptance on the Nationwide Tour but they're trying to get it out on the PGA Tour. Said they were trying to make inroads with the hybrid, then expand the marketing of their other offerings."
I have their 18 1/2 degree hybrid and really like it. Much easier to hit than my 3 iron. though it does tend to go a little left sometimes, it never seems to come up short and it stops on the green.
Those are some great shots victory. How close were you ? It looks like you were right on top of them. Anyone hassle you about taking pictures ? Are you going to be out there every day ? Do they allow pictures during the competition ? Great job
That was fun Victory. You get my early vote for Gallery pic of the year. (there's an idea!) Great shot with the dirt flyin' and the alignment aids. How many of us leave divot rows like that?
You really outdid yourself on your "training mission." Now get back out there and get some shots of the real action!!!
I took a break to eat some dinner. I have a lot more pictures to put up. Some of the pictures I took are from tree limbs, I mean, the stands. I was sitting in one of the skyboxes (might as well sit there while I can) and when I came out, I saw Michelle practicing so I shot those pictures of her from above on the stairs. I have another picture of Jim Furyk chipping from the stands so it looks like I'm above him, too.
Sometimes, I got real close to the players. I still have pictures of Jerry Kelly to put up. He was on the par 3 17th (members play it as #8) which is the signature hole at Waialae. I was right behind him for the tee shot and I wanted to get a shot of the ball in the air after his swing but I was so close that I knew I was really noticeable in his peripheral vision. So I took a picture of his address and another of his follow through.
I did hear someone go up to Vijay and apologize. Apparently, he was moving during his swing and it messed Vijay up. I'm really glad I went to the 3 days before the tournament. Only accredited media will be allowed to take pictures during the tournament so what I have left to put up is the end of it. I figure I won't be able to get anywhere near as close to the players during competition.
Today was the official Pro Am and you should see the scores. Justin Rose had the lowest score of the morning tee times. He shot 55 or 15 under par. The pin positions are in the middle of the greens. Just goes to show you how low these guys can shoot when they have pin positions like that. 65 was the worst score of the morning tee time. I left before all of the afternoon players finished. The rounds were going real slow.

The end of it? Does that mean it's over? "Over? Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl harbor?" Are those chicken feathers you're growing? Where's your spirit of adventure? Your sense of duty to your loyal GR membership? What's the worst that can happen? They confiscate your camera and throw you off the course, you resist, get tossed in jail with Bubba and we don't hear from you for 90 days or so. Ok Ok forget I mentioned the Bubba part! Paul can cover for you! Come on! Take one (or several) for the GR team!!
I'd do it if I were in Hawaii. I know we all would! I just know something great will happen to you and you'll wish you had your camera!!!
How do you think Bubba ended up in jail in the first place? Even a shot that proved you got the camera in would get you some street cred with Bubba!
If I get thrown in jail, I better get caught with the camera in my hand and not my pocket. I heard that if you commit a "cowardly" crime, you really get it!
I knew Dean Wilson placed in the top 30 at Q-School so he earned his Tour card for 2005. Then, I read an article this morning and saw that he missed Monday qualifying by 1 stroke. I couldn't understand why he would go through Monday qualifying but the article explains it. Dissappointed he's not in the Sony Open when he's Hawaii's only PGA Tour member. Oh well, hopefully he'll make top 125 this year.
Well, here's my account of day 3 from the Sony Open. Today was the day of the official Pro Am and boy were scores low. I don't know if they always shoot like this but let's just say, 65 was a bad score. I have a picture of the scoreboard in the Gallery.
If you watched Sunday of the Mercedes Open, you'll know that the weather was pretty bad. Waialae was actually flooded on Sunday but they pumped the water and after three days of great weather, the greens should be nice and quick tomorrow. There were Kona winds today and the same is expected tomorrow. Kona winds pretty much blow in the opposite direction of trade winds (what we have about 95% of the time here) and it really changes the way a golf course plays. Steve Flesch said on the par 3's, club selection anywhere from a 3 iron to a 7 iron with the wind.
On the range, Vijay seems like a personable guy. He arrives and jokes around with the guys around him but when he begins hitting balls, he just goes off. I saw him hit 2 "trenches" in a row and left. Maybe tomorrow, I'll try and go back to see how many he ended up hitting. I followed Vijay for a while and his gallery was about 10 to 20 people. This was a really good turnout in comparison to most of the pros. The Japanese players get the second largest followings. The largest gallery, numbering several hundred, belonged to Ernie and Michelle.
After the players finish on the 9th green, they all leave at the same exit. Since their gallery is so huge and the exit starts getting crammed with autograph seekers, Ernie just jumps over the wall to leave the course. Michelle got carried away on a golf cart both days. I don't think she did very well today. From what I heard, the Kona winds don't work in her favor because she's used to playing this course with trade winds. I guess we'll have to see what she shoots tomorrow with Kona winds.
Thanks for another great day of photo coverage of the Sony for the Golf Rewind family, victory!
Vijay's practice station and Michelle's bunker practice are real stand-outs in my book. :nodsmiley
Your info on the Kona winds and Michelle's struggling with them is very interesting. How well she adjusts will be the key to her making or missing the cut, I guess.
and if you ever need a caddie for your camera, just holler
You'll have to fight paul for that title. May the best "caddie" win!
Thanks everyone for the kind words regarding the pictures. It was a blast taking them and watching these guys play.
valeogut, the Kona winds very well may play a big factor in Michelle's performance. On Monday and Tuesday, her day started with a warm up on the practice range and her rounds. Then she went home. Yesterday, she had lunch after her Pro Am round and came back to the practice range. Word has it, she didn't play too well yesterday but who knows? Maybe they're comparing her performance to those ridiculous scores the pro's were putting up. I suspect she was still probably under par. She seemed pretty upbeat when she was practicing in the sand.
