He did it on 18 then, too. I only saw the last few holes. Don't know what he hit off the tee but he used his driver of the fairway and pushed it right and below the hole in the rough - pitched to the back of the green. How does one hit a 7.5* driver off the fairway? I could not even hit my 10.5* off the fairway. These guys are good.
Curios to see how many times he tries that this tournament. Normally 18 plays driver and then 2-3-4 iron because of the wind but I think they said something about the wind being a little different yesterday, probably why he went with driver on that one too. Not so sure I would say these guys, who else do you see hit driver off the deck? I wish I could hit it off the tee like he does off the deck.
That driver shot off the deck was incredible. I can't believe the season has started again. VJ and Tiger were just great off the tee. Can't wait to watch tonite. I wonder how many golfers are going to try hit driver off the deck over the next few days.
I believe Vijay's contract now stipulates that he must play a Cleveland driver. He is now playing the Cleveland Launcher Comp 460. In a press conference, he was asked if he is playing a 460 cc driver and he replied that he was and it also goes 460 yards. He was pretty successful with it on the first day.
I saw that too and I think it was #18. The yardage was listed at 663 yards! Yikes, at see level, too. This hole is described as: "Home." The hole around which the rest of the course was formulated, "Home" is an extremely long downhill, downwind par five. The hole is made reachable in two powerful blows by the assisting winds and slope. The large, receptive fairway and green are difficult to judge owing to the vast panoramas and the scale of the background. Here, the scale and drama are uncommon; the challenge is within reason, while the surrounding beauty is unparalleled.
It was actually #9 but 18 is an amazing hole. 663 yards!? Last year, the average drive was 391 yards and for these guys, it should be a birdie hole. Scores weren't as good yesterday because the trade winds weren't blowing much and distances off the tee weren't as far. I'm definitely going to have to play that hole one day but not from the tips.
Just watched the tournament and I must say that tigers swing is looking REALLY good. I cant think of one shot that got him in a lot of trouble. He was sticking it on the green, but his putter was not there, he missed four birdie putts inside of 6 feet Vijay played well again and could of really pulled away from the field had he just played the back nine a little better. The weekend is shaping up to be interesting. I guess the favorite right now, even though tiger is hitting it well, would have to be VJ
I think Tiger will be right up there by Sunday. It's amazing the scores these guys are shooting the way the greens/grain are grabbing putts and turning them off line. Watching a couple of worms-eye views of putts you could see them hit the grain & literally jump left or right. I've only played bermuda once and didn't like it. That stuff they're playing on would drive me nuts. I'd love a chance to whale away off of some of those tees though.
On the subject of hitting driver off the deck, it's much harder to hit one off the fairway now with the size of the face these guys are using than it was just a few years ago. I have an old 11º driver I used to be able to hit off the fairway when I needed to, but I have very little chance of hitting a 350 cc + driver of today off the deck. I'm sure most any pro could hit their current driver off the fairway if needed, but not many do...and not many hit the type of shot Tiger did on #9 yesterday when they try it.
As for the event, the leaderboard looks stacked, and it should be an exciting weekend...both Tiger and Vijay are playing lights out from tee to green, Ernie is up there, Sergio, etc...I still like Tiger in the end but he'll need to get that stubborn putter going quickly.
