It was a bad break but it happens all the time. Nonetheless, he's earned my sympathy and I'll be rooting for him to get a win in these next few events to make up for this misfortune. It appears as though his game is coming together again so he may take care of that issue soon enough..

so whats the actual rule if it actually went in the hole and hit the bottom of the cup and popped back out? not that it would be possible...but just wondering if there was some rule on it...

I followed Howell this morning from 6 through 9 on his brillant 64. That guy was on fire. He hit a perfect shot on the 72nd hole and got ripped off. Love the way he handled it like a man. No ******* and whining. His swing is pure perfection. Got to say that I am a CH3 fan from here on.

If it finishes outside the cup, it doesn't count as being in the cup. You'd play it wherever it ended up.

The USGA's The Rules of Golf says, "A ball is "holed" when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole and all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole."

I don't have the Royal & Ancient version of the Rules of Golf but I would imagine this definition would be identical.

I think Charles Howell gained a lot of fans the way he handled himself after 18. He didn't sulk or complain about bad luck, he went to the live TV interview and answered all the questions. He also showed a lot of grit by sinking the chip on 18.

During our "fun, not competitive" matches, well play that if you hit the pin or flag, it counts....gives ya a little incentive

It is possible and it did happen yesterday. His ball went in and out of the cup (the replays I saw, the ball did disappear briefly)

I was really impressed by Charles this week... Ive always thought his short game was a little poor...... but it looked really good this week (72nd hole aside of course) I think he may have found the missing link he needs to become a multiple winner.

"A ball is "holed" when it is at rest within the circumference of the hole and all of it is below the level of the lip of the hole."

This is the R&A definition.

I got it from their website, which has a really user friendly rules section:

Thanks Duff! The USGA and the R & A do agree on some things!
