Miller's accomplishments dwarf anything DD has done. Miller never fell so completely off the map. He had a couple of off years in the late '70's, but won at least once per year though the early to mid-80's, all while having a hand in raising about a dozen kids or however many he has. We're talking Hall-of-Famer vs. Hall-of-Flameouts.
Miller had 25 PGA Tour wins and two majors, Duval has 13 PGA Tour wins and a major...granted, Miller did it over a longer time (which can be a detriment or an aid to my argument, depending on your view), but I don't really think you can say Miller's career dwarfs Duval's. No one in the game's history has fallen off so completely as David has, so comparing anyone's fall to his would be sorta pointless.
What I was comparing were their games and status in the game at a point. Both Miller and Duval were magical ballstrikers, probably the best in the game at their respective primes. Also, both had periods of time (Miller in 1974-75 and Duval in 1998-99) when they would probably have been considered best in the world at that time. Neither really recaptured the magic after those years, even though they both won more events after that time, including a major each (both the British Open...how coincidental).
I read somewhere that Miller only played in 360 pro tournaments. That sort of surprised me. Duval had a great run but he won't be joining Johnny in the HOF unless he recaptures the magic. There are some parellels, though, I suppose.
Ah, Mr. Duval... I started this thread, and just had a humorous update. I was on the practice tee before a round this weekend, and the course pro came up from giving a lesson and complimented my swing telling me that I had a swing exactly like David Duval's. I had to chuckle, ask him which Duval, but then thank him. I'd be happy to have his game, even now!
I wouldn't include Johnny Miller in that group. Duval has yet to reach the level of Miller's career.
Oh Miller, the " I'm the greatest, better than Nicklaus " Johnny Miller, arrogance oozes out of him, as a TV commentator he is the worst of the worst. Sit and watch this idiot, the bulk of his comments are negative and full of critcism, slagging players and the shots they make, what a distasteful individual he is. He would make a good partner for " I'm not playing if Tigers' playing " Love the 3rd. Its' lovely to have an open forum where one can vent, thanks for letting me express my opinion. Mr. Duval, sad to watch, very sad indeed to see this talented young man in a desperate search for something that appears to be long gone. I'm hoping he finds what he is looking for but he has guts and the sun will shine for him one day, one way or another.
I happen to like Johnny Miller and I find his commentating style is much more entertaining than that of most others covering golf. I've never heard Miller claim to be better than Jack but there was a stretch in Miller's career when he was definitely better. A poll in one of the major golf magazines of the Best and Worst golf announcers found Johnny leading in both categories. He's his own Yin & Yang!
David Duval's search for his once world class skills is more than just hard to watch. I've always liked David but if he were an injured animal someone would've mercifully ended his suffering by now.

To each is own leaguegolf, perhaps I was a bit too harsh about Mr. Miller in any event he most definately said he was better than Nicklaus but I respect your point of view and also your opinion.
On another note, why is it that the majority of pro's who've shot the magic number seem to then tumble into obscurity? ....colonel
The Majority?? To my knowledge theres only been 4. Gieberger, Beck, Duval and Mickelson in PGA competition that is. Al had a sucessful career after his and Phil is still going strong. Anyway can you imagine how "on" you have to be besides being lucky to break 60. About 11 years ago I shot 32 on the front. I cant' imagine doing it on the back also and that would have left me still 5 shots away from 59.

i don't get what happened to duval. he used to be such a solid ballstriker and one of the most consistent guys on tour. now he's struggling to find any groove and appears lost on the course sometimes. is it a matter of health, confidence, or swing? his game has disappeared
I think David Duval is very happy where he is at now in his life. Golf is secondary in his life now and it would not suprise me if he started another career perhaps in the golf community but not as a pro.
...in a desperate search for something that appears to be long gone.
Are you joking? Duval hasn't been serious about his game in many a moon. I wish he'd quit rather than degrade the TOUR by bringing a "C" game on to the course.
