I voted Nicklaus as I think he is the best of the modern golfers, but I think Bobby Jones did a heck of a good job to bring golf to the publics eye earlier in the century
Scotty, just curious....why are Ernie and Vijay on the poll but not Tiger? I voted for Jack since it is too early in TW's career to even consider him the "best ever". However,
he's certainly got a much better record than some of the others you mentioned.....so???
Actually Ernie, Tiger, or Vijay should not be up there just yet in my opinion. And Tiger before all them... Vijay has a way to go, and so does Ernie
Dont forget Chi Chi...... The fathers of golf are Arnold and Nicklaus. i agree with whoever said for the game of golf Palmer. As a all out player Nicklaus the guy is still nasty....
I voted for Jack, but it could be Tiger "if & when". Hey mods get on the stick and put Tiger in this poll. This is one of those that we've done a few times, but it's always good for some interest with all of the new members.

Added Tiger to the poll. I agree that Tiger may someday accomplish enough to make him the "best golfer of all time!!!!!!" but he's certainly not there yet, IMO.
The greatest ever was Jack, but the "best"....who knows? Any number of guys could hld that distinction. The poll didn't mention any specific time period over which to calculate. I don't think any golfer in history has had a stretch of consistently good play as Tiger did in 99-02, save maybe for Hogan when he won his 9 of 16 majors that he played in from 46-53. That said, I still voted for Jack. But any of those three and Bobby Jones as well would factor into a true debate about the "best" ever IMO.
I think I'll take this opportunity to share a little Nicklaus greatness with everyone.
Remember the 1970 Open Championship, at The Old Course? That was the one where Jack beat Doug Sanders in an 18-hole play-off.
Remember the next Old Course Open? 1978. Jack wins his third and final Claret Jug.
Between those two Opens, and including them both, Jack Nicklaus played in 33 major championships during that time span. And he finished inside the top 10 in 31 of the 33!
Last year, both Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els did something that is very rare these days. They both finished in the top 10 in all four majors. First time for both of them.
During the aforementioned run of greatness by Jack Nicklaus, Jack finished in the top 10, in all four majors, five times! Including three years consecutively!!
When big, big championships were hosted, Jack Nicklaus showed up!
