Wie to play The Open at Royal Birkdale

Just came across the newswire a few minutes ago. What does everyone think? I guess if she can play in the states and get the attention for her and the tournament, why not in Europe?

More power to her and I hope she plays well. It's time she steps up and shows the world she's deserving of all the attention.

I was about to post that the Open is NOT a Birkdale this year, but it turns out it is the Ladies' Open!! FWIW I think she should play as many ladies' events as she can, get some good results under her belt, and THEN come back to the men's events.

Hopefully Wie will have a win before then. :nodsmiley Winning an LPGA Major will be no easy task for her. I'm looking forward to seeing how she stacks up against the best women in the world so......Let's get it on!

I don't know I give the girl credit. She baraly missed the cut at the Sony last year and this year she beat players like Kevin Na (2nd place last week), Thomas Levet (Euro Ryder Cupper last year), and Andre Stolz (won last year). Point being- everyone has a bad few days. It doesnt mean that any of those players should of quit trying on the PGA Tour. If you know what I mean.

Glad to see her in a women's tourny, but I expect to see her at some of the low level LPGA events before I start to give her praise.

I see her out practicing all the time. What a swing, hard to believe she's only 15. I think she should stick to the LPGA (except the Sony) at least untill she wins something.

"Those" players have all earned their way onto the PGA Tour with their clubs. Wie has not. Let's see how she does playing against her peers before we laud her for failing against the men.

If you are talking about her peers on the LPGA, she has done quite well.

LPGA TOURNAMENTS (Majors Bold)

Samsung World Championship, BIGHORN Golf Club (The Canyons Course), CA, October 14-17, (LPGA Tour)- T13, 283, 5-under par 74-72-67-70

2004 Wendy's Championship for Children, OH, August 19-22 (LPGA Tour)- T6, 282, 6-under par 73-69-71-69

2004 Evian Masters, France, July 21-25 (LPGA Tour)- T33

2004 U.S. Women's Open, Orchards Golf Club, South Hadley, MA, July 1-4 (LPGA Tour)- T13, 71-70-71-73--285, 1-over par. T1 for low amateur honors.

2004 Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill, VA, May 6-9 (LPGA Tour)- T12

2004 Kraft Nabisco Championship (LPGA Major), 4th, 69-72-69-71--281, 7-under par

2004 Safeway International, Arizona, March 18-21 (LPGA Tour)- T19

2003 Sports Today CJ Nine Bridges Classic, Oct 31- Nov 2 (LPGA Tour)- 69th

2003 Safeway Classic, September 26-28 (LPGA Tour)- T28

2003 Jamie Farr Kroger Classic, August 14-17, missed cut

2003 US Women's Open, July 3-6, T39 and youngest player to make the cut at age 13

2003 ShopRite LPGA Classic, June 27-29- T52

Chick-fil-A Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez, 2003, T33, 72-70-71--213, 3-under par, first amateur to make the cut.

2003 Kraft Nabisco Championship (LPGA Tour Major), T9, 72-74-66-72--288, even-par

2003 Kraft Nabisco Championship (LPGA Tour Major), Tied LPGA Tour Major low amateur round with a 6-under par 66 in round three

2002 LPGA Wendy's Championship for Children, Monday qualifying medalist

2002 LPGA Asahi Ryokuken International, Sponsor's exemption

2002 LPGA Takefuji Classic, Youngest to Monday qualify at age 12

As you can see, she has improved her placings over each prior year. In 2004, her lowest rank was 33 at the Evian Masters in France.

Last year, she also won both her singles matches in the Curtis Cup.

Michelle will be playing all four majors on the LPGA this year in addition to several other tournaments. She has accepted the full number of exemptions a nonmember is allowed to take which I think is either six or eight.

JudD,

Thanks for the recap of Wie's career. Hopefully she will continue to improve in an arena where she has proven herself to be worthy. That arena being the LPGA.

That should be a good weekend of golf. I think the men are playing the Buick that same weekend.

That one's near me and I never miss it (I'm there at least one day). Maybe I'll start a thread where you pick the PGA Tour player that will finish in the same position at the Buick that Wie does at Birkdale. That might be fun.
